It was all because of his weak witch mother. She died when she could have lived. He probably spent his days wondering why she died and what she saw in his horrible muggle father.

Yes. She was weak at that moment. But she had great magic power sleeping deep inside and strong will to leave as she wanted and died too. Tom inherited that magic and power to decide on his own. (It was a great present even if he didn't realize) And forces grew in him and he demonstrated that many times

Indeed. I think that's why he wanted to be immortal and invincible, because he couldn't understand the weakness of his witch mother. I don't understand Merope, either, but it's so mind blowing to think that the entire wizarding world was almost destroyed because of simple love potion. That shows how powerful love is in Harry Potter. Merope ruined everyone's lives because she wanted love she could never have.
