Description 4/6/2012: Giant decaying elephant - the most memorable part of a dream I had a while back. Full dream follows:

In the dream, I am part select few mercenaries that are sent to investigate an island research facility that our employer had lost contact with. We arrive at the island via helicopter very early one morning - perhaps around 3 AM - during a heavy downpour.

After landing on the island, we soon discover that the facility's inhabitants have mutated into these weird half-insect things. All sorts of strange appendages sprout from their bodies as they attack us. Several members of our group are killed off during our escape from the facility. The few of us that survive the attack eventually make it through a large blast door and our technician closes it behind us, sealing the insect-people inside.

We now stand outside at one end of a straight muddy road that leads northward to the misty center of the island, bordered on either side by thick, damp woods. Two thinner roads split off to the east and west. By this time, the sun is just beginning to peek over the horizon, lighting the fairly overcast sky with a dull orange hue.

My group members, obviously shaken from the events that took place inside of the facility, suggest to follow the western route claiming that it will lead us to the docks where we can escape the island using a boat or raft. I agree with this plan and cover the group's flank.

As I begin to follow in the rear of our small group, I look down the main road a second time and I notice a massive figure in the distance that disappears into the eerie blue fog. Curious, I choose to investigate. The fog slowly dissipates as I move toward the figure and the thing begins to take form, revealing itself as a lumbering decaying elephant.

It is far larger than the average elephant. Bits of soft flesh and shriveled muscle hang from the gaping wounds of the bloated carcass. The skin around its mouth has long since fallen off, revealing its set of teeth as if the thing was grinning. Although I am not hiding from the creature, it seems completely ignorant of my presence and it walks back and forth along the road as if stuck in some sort of thoroughly confused state.

While I stand in awe (also in disgust) at the creature for several minutes, my group members approach me and suggest that we put the thing out of its misery and take its bones to later sell and become rich once we get back to civilization. Somehow, they thought that we could carry its bones in the first place. And who would want to clean this disgusting thing's bones anyway?

Our conversation is cut short as we hear a helicopter approaching us. It hovers just over the trees on the eastern side of the road and numerous foreign soldiers begin sliding down ropes that drop from its sides. Seconds later, they begin to fire at us and we are forced to return fire. During the firefight, our technician becomes gravely wounded and tells the remaining three of us to flee into the woods as he holds off the soldiers. At first, I am reluctant to retreat with the others - a man and a woman - and I decide to return fire for another minute or two with our technician before he convinces me to flee.

I run for several minutes through the dense woods, stopping only briefly at an abandoned wood cabin where one of the other mercenaries that had fled earlier was now sitting against. Blood oozes from a small wound he clutches at his waist. He tells me that the woman he was with was taken by something in the woods. We know that she was essential to our group or to the operation as a whole, so we have no choice but to go after her.

The two of us soon arrive at a long plywood wall that seems to reach endlessly through the woods. It is much too tall to climb, but fortunately there are several small openings near its base large enough for a man to crawl through to the other side. My group mate heads through first and I soon follow once he is clear. He then calls to me to just not look up. As I move through the opening, I catch something out of the corner of my eye that looks like a giant spider leg holding onto the roof of the dark hollow interior of the wall. For some reason, I instinctively know that if I look at whatever it is, it will grab me and pull me upward into the darkness.

Once on the other side, the two of us survey what lies in our path. We stand on the embankment of a steep six meter dropoff. Looking down, we see the entire forest floor is covered with blood-stained leaves - blood appears to be dripping from the canopy above or oozing out from the trees themselves. The sight of this area instills a deep fear in me, but I soon gather my resolve as my teammate explains that this is the direction in which our stolen teammate was carried. We are not going to stop at anything until we find her. The two of us gather our courage, carefully slide down the embankment and... I wake up.

TL, DR: Giant decaying bloated zombie elephants are pretty memorable.

That is really cool, I wish I could remember my dreams with such clarity.
Nice work, it's very surreal. Pretty appropriate for the subject matter hehe.

Thanks!
I still remember it pretty vividly, even though that was a few years back. The benefits of keeping a dream journal! XD

Ahh yeah, that's really cool. I kind of wanted to keep a journal for a while but never got around to it. Seems like it's super helpful as far as artistic subjects go though, so you may have inspired me to start keeping one as well haha.
