Hiko is an aggressively passionate and condescending try-hard, expecting nothing short of perfection and excellence in every aspect of his life and often overworking himself in order to live up to his increasingly lofty expectations. He’s constantly judgmental of others and is blunt about saying his opinion about something, whether it was asked for or not.

However most of his aggression comes from a deep-set fear of others getting too close, and so he verbally and mentally burns other ‘mons until they stop trying. In reality, he’s quite timid emotionally and is overly-harsh to compensate for what he feels is a personal flaw, often described as “aggressively tsundere” by his best friend back home, which Hiko objects to vehemently.

Overall, he’s quite abrasive and dismissive of others, but once he warms up to someone, he softens up his rough exterior, showing his true colors only to those he deeply trusts.

-Background:

Hiko was born to a family with a lengthy military history, dating all the way back to the Great Pokemon War, serving in the higher ranks of the region’s militia’s serving officers, said ancestor thought to be one of the King’s own Generals. One to keep up the familial tradition of their bloodline, Hiko’s father Yuu trained his son from a young age in the art of swordplay, combat, and higher-standing ethics. As such, Hiko grew up to be proud of his power and his bloodline, often seen as an arrogant young boy that scoffed at others because he could, or stepping into situations he wasn’t needed in because he felt that it was his ‘duty.’

Unfortunately, the young equine’s noble nature and strong moral compass and sense of justice often landed him in trouble. A younger Hiko had no qualms with standing up to ‘mons that bullied weaker ‘mons, teachers that didn’t help or ignored situations, and often went to detention of his own volition solely to further scold students that he did manage to have caught in whatever heinous schoolyard act.

As he grew older and further driven to continue calling out students that were unfair or bullied others, he became more respected by his classmates. Quite often several smaller or weaker pokemon would gravitate towards him whenever they were being picked on, and the equine would in turn would approach the individual. He was enough of a threat to their student records and demerit tallies that said trouble-makers took to attempting to challenging Hiko after school or during recess to sparring matches, which nearly always ended in their embarrassment.

Eventually Hiko became extremely prideful over his role in the student body - respected by his peers, friends with nearly everyone, admired by the weaker students, feared by the troublemakers…except one. He was an oddly large and aggressive canine that enjoyed pushing around weaker pokemon, and one day he became so fed up with the teacher’s pet pony that he challenged Hiko to a spar during recess. Hiko won of course like he did with every challenger, and won again even after the sore-loser tried pouncing on him from behind. One of the teachers caught merely the tail-end of the exchange, and after the cornered canine was sent to the principal’s office for the umpteenth time and caused a ruckus in his frustration, he was suspended. Recess had long since ended, but Hiko’s classmates still talked about it throughout the rest of the day. Within a few hours he became respected by even the troublemakers that that canine enjoyed pushing around. Overnight and into the next day his classmates were still talking about the event, borderline celebrating the rowdy canine’s suspension. He was a hero.

…And tailed the next day.

At the end of that school session, just over a day from the canine’s suspension, Hiko walked his normal route home from school, and was ambushed by a now-livid hyena. Nearly beaten to a pulp and left in the dark alley with only his now dim blue flames lighting his surroundings, Hiko was finally defeated.

Rushed to the hospital with an alarmingly long list of injuries, Hiko woke several days after the assault to being encased in a near fullbody cast at the infirmary in the military base he lived in. After the doctor read him the laundry list a mile long, Hiko’s confidence and mental fortitude shattered. He received a concussion, several of his ribs had been broken and fractured, his pelvic and collarbones were fractured, shoulder dislocated, the list went on further…but his legs had by far taken the most damage. Nearly the entire bones in both his upper and lower legs were borderline crushed to splinters. He nearly fainted when he saw the x-rays – apparently his mother actually had when she was shown them days before.

Hiko learned from one of the infirmary staff that was keeping tabs on the world outside of the base for them that that canine was expelled and even his family moved up to the mountains later. A few days after that Hiko was finally allowed to use his laptop again, since it had to have been repaired from when his pack hit the ground during the fight.

Weeks soon turned to months, and no one from his school had apparently even tried to visit him. Sometime around the beginning of the second month, one of the researchers from the lab his mother worked in the next floor down visited him, leaving some extra textbooks, some oddly proportioned books, and a guitar, “to pass the time with, since you’ll be here a while, soldier.”

Soon several months had passed and school would be out for the summer. The equine had since undergone far more than his fair share of surgeries during that time, waiting for his bones to grow and start to heal, before being set again. Then the pins and rods were added to help support his bones as they continued healing. It repeated so often that he no longer felt the anxiety welling up when another surgery was to be had. The rest of his injuries had been cleared for some time, and Hiko practiced day in and day out on his guitar, first out of boredom and then after finding some comfort in the soft acoustic strumming. He also finally found his courage again to check the school message board for the first time in months after having already been forgotten no sooner than a couple weeks after his absence. When he came across the dozens of messages left for him by someone that hadn’t even attended his school, however, he became interested in talking to others again. Apparently she was friends with one of his old classmates and she had been concerned when she heard about what happened, even though she didn’t know him. Soon he was chatting nearly every day with the grass type from the outside. On the day that he was to finally try walking again for the first time in nearly a year, she even showed up to provide some moral support.

Hiko continued his primary education in the science and research wing of the military base with his first year and half of the second year of high school there as well, taught by his mother and her co-workers. His training continued with his dad day in and day out when his legs were strong enough again, attending ‘boot camp’ inside the base. He had formal physical therapy that he attended three times a week, and he took up dancing lessons on the weekends for informal therapy to keep his muscles warmed and joints from stiffening too easily. The doctors would’ve typically referred to swimming as the most suitable form of therapy for such severe skeletal, joint, and muscular injuries, but due to his typing, the cooler water, even on a warm setting, burned the fiery horse’s skin with the large temperature difference. At first he was reluctant, mistrusting and unsure of the other pokemon in the lessons, but he grudgingly found himself enjoying them enough over time, eventually taking pride in being told that he was talented at it despite his previous injuries. Presently, after his mother expressed concern that their son was too enclosed in the military’s walls, Hiko is being transferred to the Pokemon Academy under, of course, a military scholarship, and is currently pushing himself harder than ever to excel.
