Description 6. What The Hex Going On?

An episode that features a handful iconic imagery and shots of the show yet isn't talked about as much and should because it's a fun Haunting type episode.

Positives:

Like I stated, this episode is noteworthy for its content, many of which are iconic shots and images that are synonymous with Where Are You due to the fact that they are featured in the show's intro such as the ominous establishing shot of the Kingston Mansion (i.e. The Spooky house at the start of the show's intro), the shot of the gang walking past the bookshelf which opens to reveal a ghost behind it, Shaggy losing his balance on roller skates and crashing into the shower and the main ghost himself....

The Ghost of Elias Kingston who of the show's monsters is of the more human variety with how he is mostly vocal with his approach to scaring people and is played a bit subtle with his spooky presence and calm but unsettling demeanor and his main ability of seemingly having the power to put a curse on people (in this episode's case, the gang's friend Sharon's uncle Stuart) and make them age fast until they're reduced to a skeleton make him come off as a sinister threat.

Plus you heard that right, we actually see a skeleton in this episode that was once human. Granted it's by the end revealed to be fake but before all that, we along with the gang were under the belief that Uncle Stuart really did age to bone and for a kid's cartoon in the 60s, the image is quite Grim and Unsettling.

This Episode has some pretty Effectively spooky atmosphere with the very old fashioned interior of the Kingston Mansion giving off a spooky aura in addition to the Cemetery in between it and Sharon's house.

Negatives:*

*nitpicks

Wasn't a big fan on Elias Kingston's guard dog just being a regular albeit aggressive bulldog and would have preferred a more Ghostly dog as his companion.

Also for a villain who was pretty imposing for the first half of the episode, Elias Kingston kind of felt a bit doofy in the climax with the amount of times he gets hurt or outsmarted.

Final Thoughts:

This is yet another highly underrated episode that I feel should be up there as a classic of the franchise thanks to the signature imagery it provides and is one that while simple is still brilliant in its simplicity as a classic Scooby-Doo mystery.

And here is joshvirgin and his thoughts on the episode....

Hey Again Here Is Another “Scooby Doo” Episode Review This Time On “What The Hex Going On?” Enjoy.

“Zoinks? It’s Scooby Doo And Cyber And JV Too.”
“What The Hex Going On?” This Is Probably One Of The More Unusual Entries In The Series And One Of A Few I Have Little Memory Of Watching As A Kid. Not That I Didn’t See It. In Fact A Few Scenes Make It Into The Intro But This Is One I Don’t Remember Being Aired On Cartoon Network As Much. The Episode Follows Mystery Inc. Going To Visit Daphne’s Friend Sharon Wetherby For The Summer When They Notice An Old Man Wandering Aimlessly To A Spooky Voice Calling Him. Upon Arriving To The Wetherby Estate (Which Looks Creepier Than Most Other Scooby Locations.) They Learn The Old Man Is Sharon’s Uncle Stuart And He Was Wandering Towards The Kingston Mansion AKA That House In The Intro. Only To Find Uncle Stuart Now An Older Man. It Turns Out He Was Summoned By The Ghost Of Elias Kingston Demanding The Wetherby Fortune. And If They Don’t Hand It Over They’ll Be Turned Old Like Him. Which Is Pretty Creepy. Even Creepier Is When Uncle Stewart Is Seemingly Killed And Turned Into A Skeleton Later In The Episode. Yikes! During That Same Bit We Get One Of Many Memed Moments In Which Shaggy And Freddy Have This Exchange.
Shaggy: Like I Found A Clue.
Freddy: Groovy. What Is It?
Shaggy: Him. (Shaggy Points To Elias Kingston Holding His Shoulder.)
Not Only Is That Spooky It’s Also Good Comedy. Speaking Of Good Comedy There’s A Bit Where Scooby’s Pretending To Be A Fortune Teller With Shaggy Doing Ventriloquism For An Old Woman And It Has One Of The Best Jokes.
Scooby/Shaggy: Now He’s Whispering Some Thing In Your Ear.
Old Woman: What’s He Saying?
Scooby/Shaggy: Get Off My Foot.
There’s A Lot Of Good Gothic Artwork Seen In The Episode That Compliments The Setting As Well As The Villain And Also Neatly Contrasts With The Gang’s Colorful Appearances As I Mentioned In One Other Review. This Is Also One Case Where The Trap For The Villain Actually Works. Shaggy And Scooby Bait The Ghost Out With A Trunk Holding The Fortune That Turns Out To Be A Jack-In-The-Box. They Then Use A Projector That Elias Kingston Used Previously On A Rigged Floating Table And Crystal Ball To Make It Seem Like The Place Is Haunted And It Works. After Being Trapped It Turns To Be Uncle Stewart. He Used Elias Kingston’s Ghost To Steal The Wetherby Fortune For Him Self And Sold His Aging Bit With Make Up And A Wig And A Fake Skeleton. Even Though It’s Fake By The End It’s Still One Of The More Gruesome Moments The Series Had To Offer At The Time. Overall “What The Hex Going On?” Is A Classic Haunted House Episode. Elias Kingston Is Exactly The Most Visually Interesting Villain But He Is One With A More Defined Personality Since He Speaks Rather Than The Usual Cackling And His Alleged Ability To Age People Into Old Men Or Women. Plus Some Memorable Gags Here And There And Good Gothic Scenery. 4/5.
