ATTRIBUTES
General Worldview: Atheist
Ideals/Beliefs:
- Personal survival and success comes before all else
- Rational decisions trump moral / emotional decisions
- Justice is a flawed human construct
- You can't rely on others to take care of you
Goals/Dreams:
- To be as efficient as possible
- To provide success to herself and those around her
- To someday have a family of her own
Fears:
- The dark
An irrational fear that she'd rather not admit out loud- but she becomes highly anxious and agitated when she can't see her surroundings.
- Lack of control
She needs to feel in control of her surroundings, or at least over her own situation, and will do anything to keep herself from depending on others. She often does this by making sure other people are the ones that depend on her, and by having a constantly growing list of contingency plans. - Losing
Specifically- losing everything she has worked for and becoming helpless. She keenly remembers the feelings of hunger and helplessness, and she is mortified at the idea of returning to that.
Likes:
- Tea
A very important part of her daily routine that can help her keep her sanity in stressful situations.
- Flowers & Plants
She appreciates them for their beauty, as well as for both their harmful and medicinal capabilities.
- Order
A place for everything and everything in its place. She functions much better when she knows where everything is.
- Opera
She received formal singing classes during her later years in school, and is quite fond of classical and opera music.
- Success
She doesn't like to show it but she is highly competitive, to a point where she can become petty.
Dislikes:
- Surprises
She prefers to know what is going to happen before hand, or at least have a good idea of the turnout. She hates being taken off guard.
- Being the center of attention
She's much more comfortable when she can go unnoticed and focus her attention on her surroundings without distraction.
- Wastefulness
Incredibly shameful in her opinion. She makes it a point to get as much use out of everything that she can. - Self-sacrifice
The epitome of stupidity in her opinion. She can't stand people who continuously put others before themselves.
Hobbies/Interests:
- Horticulture
- Tennis
- Playing cards
- Lace-making
- Opera
Strengths:
- Pragmatic [M]
She has the ability to stay level headed and make rational decisions even during times of emotional turmoil.
- Observant [M]
She picks up on subtleties quickly and is good at reading people and situations. This coupled with her ear for gossip helps her to know more about most people around her than they know about her.
- Strategic [M]
She is the master of forethought and planning ahead. She will make sure you brought your toothbrush before you leave for that trip. And your underwear. And an umbrella. And a few sticks of dynamite. Don't ask why, she knows what she's doing.
- Patient [m]
Once a plan is in place, she has no problem waiting as long as she needs to.
- Flexible [m]
She generally has enough plans in place to allow her to change routes quickly and easily when problems arise.
Flaws:
- Cold / Distant [M]
Belle has and recognizes her emotions, but often chooses not to act on them, which often leads her to appear cold and unsympathetic.
- Morally nihilistic [M]
Doesn't believe that anything is inherently right or wrong. There are only choices and consequences- and to her the most sensible path to success often falls into some immoral areas.
- Competitive [m]
Can become overly-competitive to a point where she sabotages herself in an effort to win.
- Blunt [m]
Unless she is outright trying to win someone's favor as part of a plan, she has no problem telling others her honest opinion.
Extras:
- Some of her friends think she may have a damaged sense of taste, because she will eat anything, seemingly without a care in the world for its taste or texture. In reality this is just a trait retained from childhood, when she often went without food for extended periods of time. [Q]
- Despite the way she acts, she is actually very sensitive to the pain of others, and will go out of her way to comfort friends and occasionally even strangers (even if she is a bit awkward at it). [F]
- She really likes kids, and has always wanted some of her own, despite her qualms with the concept of marriage. [F]
- She keeps money sewn into the hems of old clothes, under floorboards, inside book spines, anywhere she can, even after she has more than enough funds to live off of. [Q]
- Performed in operas during her later school years and wasn't half bad, but lacked drive and didn't pursue it further. [F]
- She can fall asleep anywhere, and almost always falls asleep on trains. [Q]

- Physically strong [P]

RELATIONSHIPS
Family:
- Margaret Arado - sister:
Belle is like a second mother to her younger sister. After their father leaves she considers Margaret her responsibility, and gives her sister anything that she can spare- including food and clothes. She doesn't want her sister to have to suffer, and keeps her rather sheltered. They aren't very close emotionally, but Margaret often seems to know her sister better than Belle knows herself.
- Annabelle Arado - mother:
Wants nothing but the best for her daughters, but is very out of touch with what Belle wants. She tries to keep her daughter safe, and in doing so makes Belle extremely miserable. Belle however loves her mother, and would do anything she asked of her- even agreeing to an arranged marriage she wants no part of.
- Calliope Delphi - maternal grandmother:
Calliope is much closer to Belle in terms of personality, and Belle has the utmost respect for the woman. However, she often clashes with Annabelle over what is best for her daughter and puts Belle in a difficult position.
- Thalia Delphi - great aunt:
Calliope's twin sister whom lives in Aerugo. Belle has never met her.
- Lambros Delphi - uncle:
She only met her uncle a few times before he was killed, but she absolutely adored him. He was the only one in the family who seemed to understand her, and didn't talk down to her. She fondly remembers him playing piano for her for hours on end.
- Alex Delphi - cousin:
Out of everyone in her family, she is closest with Alex. As different as they are, Alex is much like his father and Belle gets along with him very naturally. During her years in Central they spend a lot of time working together for Calliope, and grow very close.
- Demetri Delphi - cousin:
Despite the bad blood between Alex and his brother Demetri, Belle still makes a point to spend time with him on occasion. They share very similar worldviews and personalities, and find it easy to talk to each other.
Friends:
- Lucille Banks:
Her first real friend. When Belle is 15 she moves to Central City and is employed by the Banks family as a lady's-maid for their troublesome daughter, who also happens to be in her grade. Lucille is extremely haughty but Belle grows to care greatly for the girl and Lucille more than proves her worth as a friend.
- Doyle Boucher:
First introduced to her as a potential suitor by her grandmother, and the only one that actually catches her attention. She admires his business sense and charisma, and enjoys his company. May not trust him completely, but considers him a close ally.
- Daisy Pilling:
One of the maids first hired with her at Youswell. Daisy is the exception out of her friends- as she is literally the sweetest person to ever exist. Daisy tries to keep her friend out of trouble and Belle looks out for her well being in return.
- Hubert Yoki:
Belle grows to admire her boss' ruthless business strategy and they develop a mutually beneficial relationship fairly early on. They share a kind of unspoken understanding of each other, even if they seem to spend most of their time bickering.
- Cornelius Bishop:
One of the first military police that comes to live on the Youswell estate, along with Grant. He enjoys finding ways to push her buttons, and they are both incredibly stubborn, but they become good drinking buddies. Bishop is the one that provokes Belle's competitive side. Their relationship consists of arm wrestling tournaments, games of truth or dare, and being each other's wingman.
- Barnaby Grant:
Grant is the protective older brother, who, along with Daisy feels responsible for keeping his small ambitious friend out of trouble, especially when Yoki and Bishop are enabling her. Belle, who has never had an older brother, gracefully accepts his interventions. (Generally he just picks her up and removes her from the situation)
Enemies:
- The Red Hand:
The Delphi family's largest competition, whom they share a tentative truce with. However, Belle may have done something ill-advised and incurred the wrath of the boss-man himself, an extremely dangerous enemy to have. - Roy Mustang:
Less of a true enemy and more like competition as he and her boss are both after the same power and influence. She doesn't go after him, mostly out of respect for his adoptive mother, but she certainly keeps a wary eye on him.
Acquaintances:
- The Halling family:
One of the most respected and well-liked families in Youswell. They cause the occasional problem, and drive her boss up the wall, but she actually gets along with them rather well when she is required to stop in.
- Jean Havoc:
Her family has had business connections with the Havoc family for years, and are especially interested in their Xingese smuggling ring.
- Chris Mustang:
Calliope's protege, and a sort of parental figure to Belle and the other girls that work for her. - Rebecca Catalina:
They have met on several occasions in East City, and occasionally cross paths through work.
Flames:
- Lucille Banks:
Belle's first friend and first (and maybe only true) love. Lucille is dramatic, beautiful, witty, and Belle is completely enamored by her and everything she represents. They develop and extremely close bond, which is eventually broken off by Belle when Lucille is pressured into an arranged marriage. They keep in touch for a time, but it eventually fades out. This may be the only decision in her life that Belle truly regrets.
- Doyle Boucher:
Belle isn't keen on most of her potential suitors, but she feels a sort of comradery with Doyle, growing to care for him with the same depth she cares for her own family. She's somewhat aware that its not a relationship that is meant to last but she takes comfort in it while she can.
- Vanessa Alder:
Belle is originally chosen to act as Vanessa's mentor at the Christmas Inn, showing her the ropes and working with her for a time. Their relationship is very casual but they still enjoy each others company.
- Leon Halfinger:
Son of a wealthy stock broker, and Belle's fiance for a short amount of time. They knew each other as children, and despite having almost nothing in common ended up spending a lot of time together. Leon always harbored an unrequited crush on Belle, and a few years after she returns from Central he asks her mother for her hand in marriage. Belle loves Leon, but is conflicted about spending the rest of her life with him. She eventually agrees, if only at her mother's bidding.
- Hubert Yoki:
Belle is the only one who isn't put off by Yoki's difficult demeanor and bad attitude. As a result she is the only one left who actually spends time with him and he eats up any attention he can get. Unfortunately, even if he did happen to have a crush on her- which he doesn't- he knows she is bad news and values his reputation, life, etc. Belle hits on him because it makes him uncomfortable and she enjoys watching him suffer. They love each other ok.
