Just for your information dear Cynchick Queen Boudicca was our ancestral auntie and she was in fact Scottish=Irish by birth! Her father was King Corbred 1stΒ High King of Ireland , and her brother King Corbred 2nd was the King of Scotland in 60AD. We are glad to have enlightened you and all who see this artwork! From Archduke Andrew O'Crowley of the Britannia Royals at Facebook

To dismiss a popular stereotype, Celts did not have red hair until it was somewhat forced into their gene pool by the Norse and Danes in the 800's.Β Boudicca- I believe- lived in the fourth century (? somewhere around there, but definitely well before the age of the Vikings).Β Chances are she was either fair-haired (Germanic Celt decent), or dark (Iberian Celtic), depending on which migratory group that particular tribe of Britons had been originally part of!

βIn stature she was very tall, in appearance most terrifying, in the glance of her eye most fierce, and her voice was harsh; a great mass of the tawniest hair fell to her hips; around her neck was a large golden necklace; and she wore a tunic of divers colours over which a thick mantle was fastened with a brooch. This was her invariable attire ...β- Dio. Actual Roman historian.
If you're going to try to school someone, get your facts straight first. Tawny = light red-brown. A natural ginger color. Both Greek and Roman historians, who lived MANY centuries before the Vikings, described Celts as having red hair. The origins of red hair go all the way back to the Paleolithic era and spread all over northern Europe. Also Boudicca lived in the first century c.e., not the 4th.
I could go on, but a five minute Google search could teach you more than I could. Some of us actually do our research.

Boudicca has a rough time of it when it comes to illustrations. She's either dressed up in one of those leather bikinis, or the artist pulls a King Arthur on her and she's anachronistically thrust forward in time (or at least her wardrobe is) to the Age of Chivalry. And, of course, this is all tainted by the fact that the only written records we have of the Britons and their culture were written by the Romans, and most of those accounts were written down during the invasion(s) of Britain by officers who might not be predisposed to describe the Britons as they actually were. I don't know is this is howΒ Boudicca would have dressed, but this is the most realistic garb I've seen her pictured in during my search ofΒ Boudicca images in the last sixty minutes.
I should also mention that this is a gorgeous work of art and I would be an irresponsible twit were I not to favorite it.

I love the Woad patterns on her arms and face, beautiful. and the face that you used a true celtic style for her sword is fantastic! I've been wanting to get a celtic short sword like that, with the oak blade and rounded guard.... and the details you put into her torque is wonderful! I love it!!!

Along with William Wallace and Grace O'Malley and Amelia Earheart She is my idol! She burned London to the ground! If that isn't badass then i don't know what is! My brother found this song about her by the way---> [link] I burst out laughing at that Roman guy! "Bad enough being beaten, but beaten by a girl?"

Not to mention she slaughtered three cities' worth of innocent civilians, raping and maiming the population. Any one who thinks she is some kind of hero is an idiot or a sadist.Β

Mhm...this is difficult to judge. I mean it shouldn't be, right? This is brutal, moraly wrong, yes sadist.
But to her people (and their decendants) she is a hero because she tried to take their land back from an invading culture. How do you do that? With war. Is it fair to attack civilians? Hell no. But the minute the romans would've found out that she is not attacking cities, they would've stationed their legions right in the middle of civilians.
It's war. There's really nothing else to say about this. War is always wrong. The degree of wrong is surely up for debate but in the end is doesn't matter because history shows that conflict is human nature. Sadly.

That's kind of my point. Of course her people called her a hero, because she probably was from their perspective. But in the big picture, she was no better or worse than the Romans morally. I don't think they're were any heroes in that conflict- at least none that we none of.Β

Well we'll never know. If she'd won and then tried to invade core roman teritory...yes, then she wouldn't have been any better I guess.

Your artwork is great, but I'll have to disagree with you about her being an amazing badass warrior woman. She lost against a Roman force that she outnumbered 5 to 1. Compared to the exploits of the likes of Hua Mulan or Queen Seon Duk, that's not exactly very impressive.
