Description I am pissed! I had an entire, long, beautiful description before the internet crashed and made it disappear! It took so long to write

Well, here I'm going to try and rewrite it:

One time, Our art teacher brought in a video of this man teaching us how to draw. He was a cartoonist and he had several hours worth of videos drawing his, in my opinion, ugly cartoon characters.
The characters used and assortment of basic shapes and exaggerated emotions of stupidity. (and no, It wasn't Jhonen XD) I thought to myself, "Who is this man, who can't even draw that well, that thinks that he can TEACH US how to draw? He's horrible!" And I even took it as a personal insult at having to watch him draw then make an entire art project, for a GRADE, using his hideous style!
But then...
He took out his sketches of a cat and a bear... realistic form. They were amazing! It looked almost real. I wondered, "Hey, why doesn't he stop drawing those ugly, unfunny comic characters and draw in realistic? that would be way cooler."

Now I know, People don't like realistic as much any more.

People have adapted a taste for the simple. The beautiful, simple artwork in the style of JV to 's art.
I draw irkens a lot, do I not? I love to draw them, and people love to see them. The truth is though that it is a mind numminly repedidtive task to draw the same shapes over and over.
I mean, I can crank out four or five of my irken sketches in about an hour. It would only take another half hour or so to ink and color them.
I like realistic because it challenges me to think and work out what I'm drawing. I figure out the muscle structure under the skin and the bones. I take time and fall in love with each of the lines. I am patient and caring with it. and my Realistic art always seems to turn out amazing. In my opinion of course.
For this drawing, I started the sketch in Half-price books. We were there probably a half an hour. Then, IN THE CAR I inked almost the entire outline and started a few of the crosshatches. Drawing in the car takes SKILLS people, SKILLS. Especially on bumpy roads. Later, when I got home, I inked and colored the rest of it. That was all probably added up to a total of 3 hours of work.

I think this came out just as good as my green one, I can only hope you all like it as much as I do.

Enjoy~

UI don't know WHY I only commented on the description last time, maybe because I didn't have time to tell you how FRICKEN AWESOME this picture was!!!! My face was covered in O's. Meaning my eyes were all the way open as was my mouth. You truly put a lot into this e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/> This is what namesake should look like!!!!!!!

Spite how AMAZING this picture is, I have to point out that the head is amazing, but it's more around the neck i'm worried about. It doesn't feel as real and as full as the rest of this drawing. Perhaps more shading and less white spots would do the trick.

THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY!! a.deviantart.net/avatars/g/o/g… " alt=" " title="GoofyGrinplz"/>

thanks for the critique! it's awful short though... XD I don't care!

Lol like this?: oOo XDDD You think I can do this every day? XD Namesake is very important to me and I want it to look good, but things as good as this come only once every few weeks when I'm inspired enough to draw them (even though I'd love to do namesake this way a whole lot)

Yes, you're very right on this one. I was running out of colored pencil and I really didn't want to get up off my lazy butt and get the pencil sharpener XD So I just settled for white space and less markings too.

Yeah XD didn't have much time.

Hey I understand that, I was just kidding. I know it's like almost impossible to draw really good realistic things for each and every single panel. I think that's another reason why people give into cartoon style so much. So I think skill in cartoon art is important. Especially when you're in animation and have to draw almost identical frames.

HAHAHA!! I was right!!! XD juss kidding sorry just had to say that.

lol

mm yes, I know it's a lot easier to just work with cartoon style. Yeah, animation is tough stuff. Have you seen my Flaming Spirit animations? They took forever so I know what it's like to have to draw something over and over and over again.

XDDD

yeha and sometimes it's not because it's easy to work with cartoon style but because it's more expressive and shows more character. Disney said it himself. That's why he preffered cartoon over realism though he could do both.

that is true, people want it simple but in my opinion I draw more cartoony than realistic art because realistic art is limited in expression, in my opinion. Cartoon is basically added expression to the real thing. And a few other things. To me, cartoon art is hard. Just in some areas. Maybe it's because I'm a bad artist, I don't know. But even still, I try to pack in as much detail as possible. Or at least some detail. In regular cartoon shows, you see 2 color flat shading. I try to blend my colors. Not to compare myself to the world, but I don't want to give into the "simple and easy" stuff. Just want some room to express. I wasn't offended by your description at all, I'm just telling you what I feel. And I don't feel like I wrote enough XD oh yeah and I've drawn some realism before I just haven't gotten the time to post it on here. they're kind of older pictures...

I think your art is a nice mix of cartoony and realistic. It's like... being able to see all that emotion put into the art but also a form that we humans are used to seeing.
Well, everybody's different. And you are definately NOT a bad artist. It's probably because I do sketches different than you that I have an easier time with it and can do it quickly. Most of the time I sketch stuff really quickly, with only one or two lines for each side of the head I'm drawing (i've become really good at drawing that hexagon of a face for my irkens now XD) and a few quick curves for the body and a few elongated triangles for arms and legs. Most of my sketching doesn't even get erased before I ink it. In your "How I do it" you showed that you put the stick figure with the joint circles which is really, really good. The thing is that you put probably fifty strokes of your pencil on your art and the same thing with your pen. That consumes a lot of time and effort. That alone may be why you have so much difficulty with your cartoon art.
a word about the "simple and easy" stuff though. It's not if you think something is simple or easy, It's more like when you're inspired you have an easy time drawing stuff.
Id like to see your realistic stuff btw

I do a bunch of lines with my pencil because for some reason, I'm not very coordinated with my hand. So if I just try to sketch smooth lines it won't go where I want to go and the lines will be too dark. With inking, I usually try to smooth them out but that's where all the accidents occur so I might accidentally do that to cover up a mistake and go too far or soemthing. I think my hand is shakey a lot because of my lack of energy all the time. And maybe because I hold my pencil the wrong way and have been holding it like that since I could write. I'm getting out of the habit of doing that but even still.
And I might post my realistic stuff tonight ^^
