Description
Jack WhiteInspired by his recent Blunderbuss tour, with his favourite blue color. I've wanted to do a portrait with one of his hats, and this pose reminded me a bit of Clockwork Orange's Malcolm McDowell.
Dedicated to my friend ~GuitarLuv and all you Jack White fans!

I hope all is well with you, and your daughter and your new life...
I have been rather immersed in the challenge of digital painting, and work for clients, but I will get back here and post more new work soon. And I am not abandoning traditional, not at all...at the moment I am disciplining myself not to fall back on my tried and true techniques(traditional), and keep pushing out of my comfort zone. I know in the end it will all serve the same purpose: to be versatile and switch effortlessly between mediums when needed.
My daughter has graduated high school and will be headed to NYC for art school this fall at Parson's...so I'll miss her dearly but have lots more time (I hope) to be here

sam is going to be getting married next april 13 and so i guess i will be helping..

I'm not sure about the "Blues on Two Trees" ...not because Jack can't pull it off...if anyone can, he can...I'm not usually a big fan of rap...do you like it?
He loves being minimalist, or like he says "putting limitations on himself forces him to be creative"...you've probably seen this, you may have sent me the link, I forget...it's been awhile, but I love what he says on this video (from White Stripes under the great northern lights documentary!) Once again, another fantastic job! I love how you painted the eyes and his face (the flesh really looks like it is sitting in all the right places when a person has their head tilted). I like the color palette you used as well, the warm colors and smoky brush strokes behind him make me feel like he's standing on stage and the lights are hitting against him =] (btw when I received a comment from you on the Keith Emerson painting, it only said "He", so I think DeviantArt did something crazy there, haha).

I am trying to be very careful about getting all the shape and color correctly...anatomy-wise! So many colors in skin, because it is a bit translucent

Thanks! I re-painted this one- well parts of him- a couple of times. I liked the pose with the strong light source and the shadow of his hat brim, and the contrasty-ness between him and the stage set...I added the colored smoke after...I'm finally getting better at that with traditional paint using a paper towel instead of a brush

Ah, it's always a pain to repaint things, but it always seems worth it in the long-run haha. And I couldn't have guessed you used a paper towel, that's a good idea!
As for my own work, I'm still building my portfolio and trying to get my work out there so hopefully I can catch that "big break." I've had a few offers so far (one was a published comic book writer), but I turned them down because I didn't see the projects going anywhere. I've actually started to do portraiture (I have to admit you kinda inspired me haha!) and I really enjoy doing it. I went to Comic Con NYC a couple weekends ago and networked a bit in the Artist Alley and I think it went pretty well. One of the people I exchanged info with was an art representative from Comic Art House, and I think I'm going to email him tomorrow. Hopefully I'm making the right move haha!
And oh geez, DA gives me weird errors sometimes as well. I'll be typing a comment and when I click "Add Comment" it claims I'm logged out and I have to log in again

Lots of people are into portraiture these days...I find it really the hardest - it requires such fine-tuned observation skills as well as anatomy skills - those were 2 areas I was weak in when I started. I could still use plenty of improvement
Hey, speaking of cartoon and concept type jobs, have you ever heard of Chris Oatley? He worked full time for Disney but he's more freelance now and is online with alot of good tutorials and inside advice on breaking into the business of being an Illustrator. He's got some great advice about building your portfolio. his website is [link] Even though I'm not interested in cartoon or animation, what he has to say is valid great advice and guidance for any artist...you might find something interesting there that could be helpful

I agree, if just a bit of the anatomy in the face is off, then it looks like the person in the portrait got a nose job or something lol. (And personally I think the anatomy in your paintings are spot on haha!)
Nah, I never heard of Chris Oatley, but now I do haha! Thanks so much for the link! I was looking through the site and he gives so much information. I am definitely going to sit down and watch his tutorials on the digital painting, they seem like they will be very instructive. His posts seem great too, I'm excited to go through it

It can get so damn confusing at times...composition, edges, lights and darks, anatomy, perspective, mood...agggh!

I really wanted to try a hat, he's got so many great hats! He's also got an unusual nose I usually stumble over...it took me a couple of partial re-paints to get it right, the nuance of the stare. This wasn't one of his more friendly stares, some day I'll do one of those

I notice it alot now in concept art and movies, too...color grading towards cyan, so the fleshtones and blood and fire - all the drama- really pops

I definitely believe the resurgence in realistic art is due to movies and game art. Great book I just finished reading: "Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers" he details the how's and why's things work from a cinematic/storyboard approach.

It's good. Finally getting into design stuff! Not just being given silly take consuming projects. I just finished up an editorial cover for an article I was assigned to. Haven't posted it on here yet, I don't know if this is the right place for it. But here's the project on my tumblr [link] .
I find that I'm most happy Monday, Wednesday, Friday when I have my design classes. Tues/Thurs are kind of a drag. Just figure drawing and a music culture class. I mean, they're both good classes. They just don't compare to my design classes.
Deadlines are evil. But a necessary one. I agree. I need more hours in the day as well... that way I can get more sleep in.

that's fun stuff you're doing! are you sketching in class with an iPad these days? I'm always tempted... I tended to hate my 3D classes, but Design classes get you doing creative problem solving. And at least they give you projects that are interesting! (unlike many clients). Figure drawing is like going to the gym...you don't really want to, but you know it's good for you
Deadlines suck but it does teach you to work under presssure for sure...

Yeah, some of it is pretty fun. A little scary since I don't know how I'm going to get it all done and done well!
As for in class, I'm just using pencil and an 11x14 sketchbook. I find it easier to work outside the computer and get it how I want it to look first. It's faster. Then I scan and trace over it in photoshop. I know there are better programs for digital painting but I know photoshop and don't want to have to deal with a learning curve right now. I plan to keep working on this stuff over the Christmas break to get better. Class is just a vehicle for starting me on it.
Yes, that's going to be interesting. I've got ten icons now for 'how to make a martini if you're James Bond'. I need to come up with a better one for 'do not stir', but I have crit today so maybe someone in class will have a better idea than me. I should post more process on here but I just never get around to it. I'm trying to do that on my tumblr but it's still hard to make myself do. I never stop working long enough. >.< Haha.

Most digital artists start with a scanned sketch. I've been following some of the pros who are willing to share their workflow and tips on getting more out of Photoshop. I think Photoshop is still the tool most pro artists use for painting; those who use Painter often use that for finishing work.
I like how fast they (concept artists and digital painters) develop their ideas into finished works, and the versatility (because of layers) in changing up key aspects when needed (like color gamut). Those kinds of changes are near impossible doing traditional work.
I find that fellow students teach you as much, sometimes, as Professors. I'm not surprised you don't have time to post when you're in the thick of a project...after all there are deadlines...and you always have to deal with the possibilty that a project will take longer than you ever expected.

I do sleep every night. At least like five hours. I know I have to or I'll just be useless. A lot of fellow students always complain about all nighters, I haven't had one yet. The latest I've been up is near 1am. I get up at 7am so that's not bad.
This weekend is going to be pretty light in comparison to the last few. At least on design related stuff. I have two tests to study for next week so I might still be busy. I wish I didn't have to take tests. That would be so nice.
It amazes me how quickly concept artists work. But I guess that's just practice and doing the same type of thing all the time. They just get used to it. That and they've probably highly customized their key commands and things in photoshop to work quicker. Maybe one day I'll get there.

you will get there, for certain! I'm lost without my key commands when I change from PC to Mac I get confused
don't laugh I once did an entire semester's work (for illustration class) in 3 days, and didn't go to sleep. When it was time for the crit I accidentally slept through it LOL. That was really stupid of me 
Used to fall asleep in my art history class, too...it was 8:30am, and they'd turn the lights out and show slides and lecture so
These days I prefer 6 or 7 hours, anything under 4 and I'm miserable
You're smart not to do all-nighters...whatever you think you gain, you end up losing at the other end. Architecture students did that regularly, stayed up for 72 hours. No thanks!

I haven't really done any parting. Not really my thing. I go to some once in a while but don't drink or anything. I just like watching other people. Haha.
I have an 8am everyday, so I don't think I can afford to party anyways. And I have to sleep! Though, there are only two of three things you can choose in life when being an art student. Good work, sleep, and a social life. Can't do all three. So I suppose I chose good work and sleep.
