Description Jack White iii
In honor of the 15th anniversary of the formation of the White Stripes (On July 14, 1997 they performed 3 songs at an open mic night at The Gold Dollar in Detroit, and history was made.)
this painting was inspired by an old photo I found of young Jack White, posing with his guitar.

of course I can never leave well enough alone...the blood comes from the scene in "It Might Get Loud" movie where he's playing and his fingers are bleeding, smearing over his guitar.
The Medusa and snakes I had fun with, guess I wanted to give him a deadly woman who could wrap her arms around him.

tech details:
the painting is done in traditional oils and acrylics on board, 20x25
6 of the green light trails are done in Photoshop using an excellent set of brushes by a fellow deviant (will post who, I must track down the creator)...
I will re-create this effect using traditional acrylics or oils back on the original artwork in a few days, and re-upload the final, which will be all traditional medium. Final details like this I like to test drive in PS before I commit them to the canvas, because I don't want to ruin the painting at this point

This is incredible. I say that as both a HUGE fan of Mr. Jack White, and as a lover of art. Really incredible. That airline guitar looks so real it makes my mouth water... Love that guitar.

I know it comes from an older photo of him, but I wanted to do it for a long time...this was from the White Stripes days....next I will do one when I find a great shot with one of his hats...I have one I like, but it's wayyy too small.

your welcome
I love all of his photos from the White Stripes
days. Although he always looks so young in those
photos at the time. I hope you find a photo where
he is wearing his hat. He looks good wearing a hat
I must say.

'tis fine, np...
I hope Jack likes snakes! If not he could envision one of his past girlfriends - or wives, maybe
I like that song alot - 7 Nation Army - also his cover of U2's "Love is Blindness" that will be in the Great Gatsby movie is excellent

well, i think meg white was his only wife, but yeah, girlfriend maybe? i never really understood girls, they're very complex human beings...
yeah, i love the riff! especially the fact it sounds like a bass but is actually a normal guitar tuned down an octave makes it even more cooler!
did you watch that scene where he teaches jimmy and edge the riff in 'it might get loud'? that was totally awesome

I need to watch that again IMGL

okay, i was wrong on my point
it says they were married from 2005 to 2011...
i didn't watch that one, i still need to watch TSRTS and IMGL - but i have neither

Cynthia-Blair In reply to tskorigami [2012-08-17 04:57:34 +0000 UTC]

I never keep up with anyone's private life...I just remember reading that about Jack
When you can, you will love them both! (TSRTS and IMGL)

tskorigami In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2012-08-17 15:50:48 +0000 UTC]

okay...i got a HD copy of TSRTS. I mean...it's so freaking amazing.
i don't get all the guys who say that their performance was crappy and stuff. it's fantastic. i watched like the first 15 mins or so (i don't have enough time to watch it in one full session) and i was blown away!
lovely stuff.
oh, and i have another example of how voice is affected by added weight - axl rose is one fine case.
compare this: [link] to this: [link]
and also axl's physical figure. he used to be slim back in the 80's and 90's, i think his sedentary life during the hiatus added to his weight

love the blood stained guitar!

Thanks sooo much!
His expression was a pain to get right, I think I worked it over a few times at least!
Blood is pretty easy, but I find I end up doing it a bit differently every time, haha...this was mostly smear-y blood, because he was strumming...then I realized I had to show where he was bleeding from, too...so it would make sense

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tskorigami In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2012-07-28 12:58:00 +0000 UTC]

i always sucked at drawing hands, faces and expressions
i say you did a great job at this
i dunno how easy blood is, but you gotta make it convincing, that's a given...and i'm quite sure jack would be proud to see this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to tskorigami [2012-07-31 06:27:03 +0000 UTC]

Blood is fun, not hard, once you get the paint a bit transparent and the right color, hehe...the edges are a bit darker than the center, usually. I think I've done every kind of blood by now...drips and smears and splats

If Jack ever does have a concert near me, I'll be sure to go and give him this

Test driving things you intend for traditional art digitally sounds like an interesting idea.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to HappyAggro [2012-07-18 04:25:21 +0000 UTC]

I've done that for a long time now, it's part of my workflow...It really speeds up the creation process because you can visualize on a monitor instead of guessing what it will look like, and do a bunch of variations, different colors, etc. I use it mostly to compose my design idea and later on, if I get "stuck"...I play with ideas...without ruining the painting, LOL.
I discovered lots of trad artists doing the same thing, now...The computer is just another tool
There are some famous illustrators who use both digital and traditional in the same finished piece.

15 years already huh?Wow,yeah this is wonderful!I fell into them seriously around Elephant.I still love that record very much.Always had a huge crush on Meg and all her shyness. And definetly loved the stuff Jacks' put out with the Racontuers and The Dead Weather too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to ChrisCrowell [2012-07-17 00:59:23 +0000 UTC]

I admit I didn't get "into" them til more recently...I never heard of Jack before the movie It Might Get Loud. But he is a fascinating character. I've never heard much about Meg at all...her shyness explains that, I guess. It's too bad they finally called it quits on the White Stripes, though. I do love the Raconteurs as well. Haven't listened to as much Dead Weather yet. I've been training my Pandora radio to play what I want but it's getting annoying (I have a "Jack White" station). I think it's time for another internet radio channel.
Did you ever see the "American Pickers" TV episode with Jack White? He bought an elephant head (a real one)...it was a pretty cool tour of Third Man Records.

Thanks!
This was a fun one, but it was a bit large and full of details so I had it hanging around awhile before I decided it was finished. I still can't decide if it's finished! Jack is finished in it, anyway...if I change anything, it will be in the background stuff

Vonni-Von [2012-07-16 01:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Your work is absolutely incredible! The way you capture his likeness & are able to include such detail amazes me. I do very little painting, but seeing your work really inspires me to get practicing. I'm excited to see the final version!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to Vonni-Von [2012-07-17 01:47:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! It's a pretty large painting, so I can get a bunch of detail in with small brushes
Yes, I will use this version of the light trails as the prototype for the final. So the final should be almost identical, or very close - I do make changes as I go along. Jack won't change, or the chair or anything. I give it a coat of acrylic gloss and go right over it with the transparent greenish grayish paint...if I make a mistake I just wipe it clean and try again

Traditional painting is fairly easy for me...I only wish I was as good with digital paint! But then, I need to practice that more

I really discovered Jack through that movie, and I always wanted to find a way to get that scene (the blood on his guitar)into a portrait of him. Doing red blood on a red guitar was the hard part
Honestly the whole Medusa part of the chair was just an afterthought...I wanted some kind of womanly/sexual tension in there. Next time I'll probably use his 'blue' theme since he's into blue lately.

Thanks so much!!

Wild-Theory In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2012-07-17 08:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Me too I always quite liked the White Stripes but started to respect him a lot more since seeing that, same can be said for Edge as well I spose lol. The bit is awesome I can imagine the red on red especially given they are both quite glossy it's a similar technique so hard to make it stand out, You managed it really well tho

The tension comes across really well it was a brilliant after thought Would be awesome to see a blue one can't wait to see what you come up with

Your Welcome

awww... Thanks!
I think my next Jack needs to have one of his iconic hats...when I find just the right photo
The Edge's technique is really interesting but for some reason I never quite got into U2, can't say why... I LOVE Jack's version of their "Love Is Blindness" for the upcoming Gatsby movie When I heard U2's version, it was kind of meh.

Oh my goodnessss!!!!!!!! I cannot tell you how much I love piece! I've always loved this picture of Jack, and you captured him so well, as usual, and made it so much more fantastic! The Medusa idea is great and I really like that you put the blood in

And I love all of your work, keep it up! ;D

Thanks so much! I'm glad you like it!
He has a wonderful look when he pouts
I guess I wanted him to have a dangerous woman to contend with, just to add some drama along with the blood
next time, I must find one with him wearing his hat
