I'm missing a legend or a key to read this map! What are the striped regions? What are the red and black dotted lines?Β
But apart from that, this is really an awesome map!

Its all labeled in the map - but yeah, i could make more use of legends for my maps.
The black dotted line is the border of the New Kingdom of Egypt ca. 1450 BC.
And there is no red dotted line - just an expansion in purple/violet of the land
borders to highlight the territory controlled by Ptolemaic Egypt.
The striped regions are the territories that were lost tillΒ the reign of Cleopatra (VII) 51 BC.
They didn't held on for to long to most of these lands.Β

hey that's cool! I always liked maps like these, maps that actually tell a story. I wasn't trying to be difficult about it, no worries. I was just trying to understand it, because dang it looks cool!Β

Glad you like it - and you didn't come off as such, just wanted to be precise and point things out

Wow so they even had parts of Anatolia? Crazy

Yeah, some parts for a long time like Lykia and Kilikia, but most for a far shorter timespan.Β

That period of Egyptian history that popular culture consistently gets wrong...

Which thing exactly you're thinking of?

Ptolemaic Hellenized Egypt. That period of Egyptian history popular culture gets consistently wrong.

Uhm....but what part of popular culture you're referring to or which it you thought of seeing the map?

Oh, movies, video games etc. This map is as accurate as one can be going by the writings of historians and researchers and is very well done, as the majority of your material is by far.

Yeah, most of them. Just thought you had a very good (bad) example.
Or maybe one were its depicted way better. Thank you!

Worst I can think of off the top of my head would be Rome Total War (first one, it's a video game) which had Bronze Age Egypt with a New Kingdom feel for whatever reason.Β
I can't actually think of a depicted well. ._.

Welcome!

Yeah, that came also to my mind. What do you think about Ptolemaic Egypt in the second edition of the game?
Its atleast better as the first one.Β

Do you know Assassins Creed Origins? Atleast some things seem rather accurate. Like greek and egyptian
populations living alongside but don't really get along. And also not just aΒ homogeneously population.Β
Also the use of both languages and the depiction of both religions.

I haven't played the second one so I couldn't say, nor have I played AC Origins, alas.

Hopefully they did better all around both of them though?

Like i said - AC-O atleast feels and looks relatively accurate.Β  The TW-franchise had never been that
accurate (not that its gameplay hindering) but i'd say its atleast better in TW-R2 for Egypt and the other factions.

I mean, I recall no legends of men in white capes fighting Anubis, but sure.

The Julii family did exist at least. Their most famous member you might remember as one Gaius Julius Caesar.

Love these random (only for my uneducated pov on the matter I presume) enclaves all other that Ptolemids and other post Alexander states had.

"Sure I will rule over Aigyptos, Cyrenaica, Levant and Cyprus and also uhhhhhhhhh various splotches of Anatolian coast of varying sizes going all the way to the Sea of Marmara and also easternmost tip of Crete, yeah I think I am good to go."

Cyowari In reply to 0nonim [2019-01-20 18:34:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they hold some of them for a bit of time but most of these exclaves were lost some years after.

Thanks and yes, it was. The Hellenistic Era did leave a gigantic imprint - i'd say till the late antiquity.
