Description What Is This?
I was asked by many about my musical influences when making stamps and asked to share some of the stories behind the concerts I have seen. I have been to 1200+ live concerts (all national touring bands/singers with albums, not local club bands or tribute/cover bands, have seen plenty of those too) and have saved every ticket stub and backstage pass (when I had one) and kept notes (like a journal) on every show I have ever seen. So from time to time I will scan in the ticket stub from a show I saw (going in no order, skipping around) and talk a little about the show and my opinion. All information property of dA--stamps/dA--bogeyman (me). This is entry#15.

The Concert:
Adam Ant
The Romantics (Opening Act)
February 1, 1984
Bayfront Center Arena, St. Petersburg, Florida (USA)

Just So You Know:
Adam Ant was on tour in support of his 'Strip' album, Marco Pirroni was the lead guitarist on this tour. The Romantics were touring in support of their very successful 'In Heat' album.

Personal:
I was heavily into Punk/New Wave/New Romantic music in my youth and Adam Ant was one of my heroes at the time (still enjoy his music today). This concert fell on my birthday YAY! so my parents got me four tickets for the show so I could take three friends with as my birthday present/party. Big Jim, Mason and Joe joined me in dressing up Adam Ant style (make-up and all) for this concert. We had the albums and loved the music and were well primed for this one. I would have tickets to see Adam Ant two more times after this and both of those shows were canceled - so this is the only time I have ever seen Adam Ant live in concert.

The Live Concert (Opener):
The Romantics opened the show and they were very good. They were all dressed in black and had cool new wave rockabilly-type haircuts. Their set had a good groove to it and they got big responses from their songs "One In A Million", "Shake A Tail Feather" and "What I Like About You". They played for about 45-50 minutes total with one encore, "Talking In Your Sleep", which put the crowd in a good mood and ready for Adam Ant.

The Live Concert (Headliner):
There were plenty of people dressed like Adam Ant and other new wave/new romantic bands in the crowd that night (including us, it was great to people watch and see them all). When the lights went out and the band took the stage in the dark and played an intro and the spotlights went on center stage and there was Adam Ant in full pirate-highwayman regalia singing "Scorpios" and the crowd went ballistic. Right away you noticed the two drummers (most bands only have one) and how cool it looked to watch them drum in unison on two big drum sets and throw drumsticks back and forth to each other not missing a beat in the music (they would do that all night). Adam went straight into "Baby Let Me Scream At You" and the girl fans all went nuts and screamed at Adam in the chorus of that tune. I noticed there were two large poles leading up to two large platforms above the drum sets and wondered what they were there for. Adam then sang "Dog Eat Dog", "Puss N' Boots" and "Navel To Neck" (this is a slower ballad song and Adam sang along with the crowd on the chorus of this one). I enjoyed that Adam was playing many songs from his new 'Strip' album right from the start because I REALLY like that album and think it's a masterpiece of music. Adam really got a big response from almost every song her played that night (there were no 'down songs' when the crowd would sit and relax or anything). The dual drummers really outdid themselves on "Antmusic" and did a joint brief solo at the end of that tune. I finally found out what those poles were for during "Desperate But Not Serious" - Adam climbed a back staircase and came sliding down the poles a few times and it was cool and of course the crowd loved it and cheered him on. During "Strip" Adam took his coat off and then scarf and other small pieces of clothing till he was down to his shirt (which was open), boots and trousers and he gave various pieces away to girl fans in the front near the stage. Marco Pirroni's guitar playing was masterful and he played around with Adam and the crowd throughout the set. Adam ended his set with "Stand And Deliver" (using the poles again) and "Vanity". He would come back out with a different cool outfit on and three encores - "Goody Two Shoes" (poles again), "Fall In" and "You're So Physical". Adam and his band played for about one hour and forty five minutes total and the crowd was ecstatically happy with the concert. The only song I really wanted to hear live that he didn't play was "5 Guns West", that being said it was a wonderful concert birthday party and one I will never forget. Ant Music For Sex People!
