Description A smallish watercolour, 8 X 12 inches on Strathmore 80 lb. WC paper. I painted it with Pelican (tray) watercolours. This is a rather uneventful, or rather uncomplicated piece but I like it quite a bit. Flowers aren't so much my cup of tea, at least not like I used to love painting them but every once in a while it's nice to paint something simple, beautiful and contemplative. As flowers go, I love roses both to paint and enjoy having around.

Your work is amazing. I can't understand why you're art isn't up on the front page or at least in Daily Favorites. You seem to handle the brush VERY well. It's giving me an eye-gasm. You're my new favorite traditional artist!!!

You're not allowed to faint unless I'm around to go through your pockets!
Your compassionate remarks make me smile, and motivate me to get more stuff up on the sit, something I figured I'd be doing alot more of this summer. Oh well, life had other plans. I'll get on that soon though. Thanks again for the kind words and I hope you're enjoying your summer over there. I'd love to visit your part of the world. I'd bet on me never wanting to go back home. Be well...DaviDKoloc

You deserve my sincere words. I really like your artwork! I was looking forward to make some painting and drawing myself... but something allways gets in the way :/
You are very much welcome! You most certainly wouldn't want to leave Portugal EVER! x) I, on the other hand, would LOVE to go to the US. I have family there, but I can't seem to convice my parents to allow me to travel all that distance

Anyway, I promise never to faint around you!

Keep up!!*

this is really beautiful; a rose can be a symbol of so many things and you've captured all of them beautifully.

Thank-you for the kind words. I've always loved the symbolic values of roses as well. I used to carve tombstones and in the course of that endeavor I discovered lots of symbolism for lots of flowers. Looks like you live somewhere quite beautiful. Have fun and keep up the great work. David

Thank you, you're every bit as kind as you are talented.

It must have been fascinating, carving tombstones. Some people may think it morbid, especially given my age, but I find a certain inspiration in things relating to death. Moreover, I find it a constant inspiration knowing just how many jobs and professions there are relating to art. It seems to be a great world for artists.

I agree Mandy. It is a great world for artists. When people ask me what I think constitutes art, my answer is simple; Anything that speaks to, touches, or in any way moves my spirit. Now, not everything that does any or all of those things was necessarily made by humans, but even those things I deem art, simply of another, decidedly more powerful, mysterious and splendid origin.
I believe all humans are entrusted with the continuance of creation. Whether we're preparing a meal, raising a child, carving a tombstone or painting a picture we should strive to be thoughtful, or artful. Moreover I believe, if our spirits are healthy and sound it is our nature do that very thing. We just can't know the extent or impact of our actions, ways or words, however subtle or seemingly insignificant, on our fellows.
Looking back on my life, it is the unplanned or uncalculated deeds and words that have made the greatest impressions on me.
Do you want to hear something crazy? After learning all my boss thought I needed to learn to begin carving my first tombstone, an arbitrary length of time practicing, depending on a particular craftsmans progress, one morning he came up and just gave me my first work order. It was a simple stone, a flush marker we called them, and it was for, none other than, my childhood bully. I hadn't even thought of him in probably 20 years and then I get to/have to, carve his tombstone. Some irony huh?
Life is so strange and full of wonderment. I love it.
Thanks for letting me bend your ear, and thanks again for the thoughtful correspondences. Feel free to continue anytime Mandy. Take care, David

It is lovely, may I have a copy to email to my 11 year old daughter who is crazy about roses? I would never use it in any manner except to send to her to make her smile. I will understand if you would rather not.

Bless your heart. Thanks for the nice comments. Please e-mail me and we'll get your girl a really nice print of this rose. I love your shot of Mt. Rainier. My father, who taught me to draw and paint, graduated from the University of Washington at Bellingham. Although he was a career Naval Aviator he painted quite a bit, and I have fond memories of his watercolours of Mount Rainier. Please get in touch with me so I can write and help you keep your chin up. Yours, David

I love the simplicity of this, but in no way are roses 'simple' to paint or draw. I have tried only a few times but somehow they are never quite right.

You're so right. I've got scads of them that didn't turn out 'smelling as sweet' as this one did, believe me. Thanks, DDK

That is incredible D: haha.

Very very nice. I would have liked it more though, if the rose was a deep red. Although its cliche and all, but still I just love deep red roses

..nice detail, it seems so soft too
