Description Seeing the first official promo shot of Lt. Stamets from the upcoming Star Trek Discovery I just couldn't resist

Lt. Stamets and Cadet Tilly on a "harmless" mycological expedition.

Coloured sketch since I haven't got the time for "full paintings" at the moment.

Hey there!
I'm from the project comment, and my tag word was "human" c:
I know, you daily do human art, but this stuck out to me, since there's such a contrast between the humans and the freaky mushroom in the background xD

What I really like about this deviation is how you chose the colour scheme, the complimentary red and green really make the mushroom stand out and adds to the creepiness. What I also like about the colours is how you shaded everything by including the colours of the background, which grounds the characters so nicely!
What threw me off a bit was the stark blue of Stamets' and Tilly's uniform. I see that you changed the hue a bot towards purple, but personally, I think it clashes a bit with the red and green, which are already quite strong on their own. Perhaps incorporating some of the green into it could mellow it out a bit, or lowering the saturation a notch.

Now to the characters!
I really like the more sketchy style you used here, especially since it makes them seem more alive somehow, and not as flat. Stamets' expression shows really nicely here, maybe Tilly could use some extra emotion as well? She seems just a little it stiffer than him c:

But that's really just a minor detail!
Overall, I'm in love with how you portray the characters, and your human anatomy is on point! This piece really stands out to me compared to your other pictures, too, since it seems a bit more playful in a sense?

Thanks for reading though this awkwardness, and hope you don't take me too seriously! I can't even draw humans on the same level that you do.
Keep doing your thing and keep up the great work!

Your next tag word is "shine", please visit Hikatsuke 's gallery and comment on one of her deviations!
Have a great day

Hahaha, this made me smile when I first saw it ^^ The oblivious expression of the two humans with the seriously evil looking Shroom in the background is so funny! I also like the contrast between the realistic characters, and the more cartoonish style of the Mushroom. The contrast between the saturated dark blue of the suits and the desaturated green of the shroom emphasizes the difference between them, and the red background conveys as sense of danger, as well as adding another contrasting color. Very nice work!

Thank you so much for your words, Iduna-Haya.
This was a first in trying to draw a cartoonish character. It was the first time, my sons got interested in one of my pieces .

Einfach toll!

Der Quick-and-Dirty Sketch-Stil macht gut was her und erzeugt seinen ganz eigenen Reiz.

I've not managed to get myself interested in the upcoming new ST series yet ... When will it begin?

Dahkur In reply to AloiInTheSky [2017-09-11 06:56:52 +0000 UTC]

Star Trek - Discovery starts today in two weeks on Netflix (I have yet to subscribe to it since I haven't got Netflix)

The drawing has nothing to do with the series. It was just the fact that the blond Lieutenant is a mycologist (which in itself I find intriguing, since so far we only had "science officers" - as if one person would be able to cope with every field in natural sciences) and that his first official promoshot had him looking so confused with his communicator. So I HAD to draw this .

Argh, well since I've just subscibed to a illimited access card to movie theaters for this year (yay), I won't afford Netflix too

I'm such a mushroom lover myself XD Both for ascientific interest (mushrooms are such fascinating living beings, yes they are!!!) to recognise them, collect them and eat them XD

Gosh that mushroom is both equal parts humorous and terrifying.

Great piece! I sort of reminds of TOS with the colors and atmosphere. Ooo That was a funny promo photo when it came out. I was tempted to draw it myself but I'm glad you beat me to it so that I could see it.

As for liking mushrooms as a food you have not tasted real mushrooms until you have stuffed mushrooms with scrambled eggs. Delicious. Those sliced canned ones are awful. Guh.

The metallic parts on their uniforms came out really well and I like how you drew their features.

Dahkur In reply to summerartistart [2017-09-11 05:32:50 +0000 UTC]

I had so much fun drawing that mushroom. My sons were standing by my side and loved it very much

At first I wanted to colour it lightly, cause the sketch didn't look too great without colour. But then I couldn't figure out which brushes to use for the kind of colour effect I had in mind, so I ended up with my oil brushes and saturated colours.

The promoshot is gold isn't it? With the others looking stern into the camera, holding weapons or just seeming very determined, Stamets came along with his "huh? Who did send me this photo to my communicator?" look -and I instantly fell in love!   If this character doesn't live up to my expectations I will silently cry into my pillow

And for mushrooms ... ever tried them breaded and fried? I could die for this! Just so delicious! (I am a mushroom lover, I have to admit ... unfortunately both of my sons go "urgl, argl, baaaah!" when I serve them.

Ooops sorry ... I kind of remember that you told me of your fungi phobia before. So Stamets being a mycologist will definetely not be the character for you

suburbantimewaster In reply to Dahkur [2017-09-10 21:31:47 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember mentioning a fungi phobia and I don't really have one.  I just don't like mushrooms as food.  Though, I'll have to admit, I  watch a preview on YouTube for a sci-fi series premiering on Fox by Seth McFarlane that I mistook for Discovery at first.  For a minute, I actually thought this was a drawing for that series.  Second time I've gotten the shows confused.

Hmm ... who else was it then? Somebody told me about fungi phobia, which I found quite fascinating since I mentioned it in ff of mine as a joke and I had no idea it really existed.

Not liking mushrooms as food, of course, is much more harmless .

I've only seen one trailer for this other show. And I thought it was a fan persiflage, til somebody told me that it's meant for real.
