Goza and Mal attempt to ask Count Bloodmoon to help fight Grendel, but he refuses, as he hates humans, and chases them away. Also wanting to marry his daughter off so she could have a better life, Bloodmoon looks for suitors and chooses Jack Remel, who is excited. He and Remel agree that once he marries Twilight, Bloodmoon will relinquish his leadership powers to Remel. For some time, he had been Count longer than he should be, and Zugaikotsu is pressuring him to give up his leadership to a successor, even threatening to remove him from office if he does not comply soon.
Meanwhile, Musra has been living happily with Twilight, and they become close to each other, learning from one another like culture and language. Soon, they discover they have fallen in love with each other and they kiss. Jack Remel arrives at Twilight's cabin and discovers Musra. They are taken back to Bloodmoon's castle, where Musra is flogged and locked up, and Bloodmoon tells Twilight she will marry Remel that night on the full moon, also intending to kill Musra to drink his blood.
Because Musra got close to Twilight, Bloodmoon reneges on his deal with Remel so he can amass an army to destroy the humans of Romania. Overhearing this and fearing she would lose Musra, Twilight sneaks into the dungeon and helps Musra escape out of love, also revealing her father's intentions to him. She tells him to go live a free life, and he reluctantly says goodbye to her. Musra goes to the Dragon Shifters' hideout and warns Zugaikotsu, Rockbeard, and Sirius of this plot. They head off to remove Bloodmoon from power, leaving Musra behind. He is torn between going on his own and going back for Twilight. After coming to peace that he is in love with the vampire, Musra changes his physical appearance to an unrecognizable state and dubs himself "The Phoenix" before setting off to rescue Twilight…
