After publishing his studies on Dinosauria, Eric Bower is recruited by Nick Dodge, who is apparently one of Eric's childhood heroes, to join him in a new expedition to Alayssia. They are joined by Jordan Madeline, Derrell Taylor, Bartholomew Michaelson, Robin Backstrand, Tristan Hrabak, William Black, and other scientists. They are greeted by Fire Lord Harmona, who assigns Ashlee and Rokai to be their bodyguards.

While the expedition team rests for the night, Harmona is met by Lord Vamuss, leader of the Equalists, a band of Alayssians who believe in a completely unified Alayssia. They had earlier asked Daizua for a unification, but he turned it down because the Mutation War ended. Sensing that some of Vamuss' men were venombenders and shadowbenders, Harmona turns down the offer, and Vamuss leaves in peace.

Weeks into their trip, Nick and Eric realize that Alayssia was too new, too strange and, above all, too dangerous to explore and study in so short a space of time. With countless discoveries of new species and new behaviors every day, it became painfully clear that the first two expeditions only scratched the surface. So they made it their goal to extend their study and, eventually, establish a permanent base of operations on the island…
