Description Although that line on their face isn't their mouth it does make them look like they are smiling

Tech specs: Canon 40D (F13, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon EFS-60mm macro lens with 50mm of extension (around 2x magnification since I didn't have the EF-S 60mm at minimum focus) + an MT-24EX macro twin flash (manual mode 1/16 power).

I really must ask you what brand of extension tubes you use.. I'm thinking of getting some and want to know the best brand thats compatible with the EF-S 60mm

I have the Canon EF II tubes, but I think that Kenko makes a set that's also EF-S compatible.

Ever thought of getting the 180mm ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dalantech In reply to Denitorious [2009-12-07 08:13:02 +0000 UTC]

I have it, but why do you ask?

Denitorious In reply to dalantech [2009-12-07 11:14:55 +0000 UTC]

I bought myself that one.
In hope to make similiar shots like yours.
I guess I will need to get a flash.
Is the 180 good for it too ?

dalantech In reply to Denitorious [2009-12-07 11:51:23 +0000 UTC]

IMHO the 180mm isn't a very good lens for going above life size -takes way to much extension (over 100mm) to hit 2x. The best way to go above 1x with it is to use a teleconverter.

It's actually easier for me to take a high magnification shot with a short working distance than with a long one. That's why you see me shooting above life size with the MPE-65mm or the Ef-S 60mm + extension tubes.

Damn, hm.
What about those:

Will I be able to re-produce those ? Any of them ?

First two shots are at about 1x.
Third shot is at 2x.
The fourth is over 1x.

You can shoot at that mag with the 180mm, just add a 2x teleconverter to it. IMHO though it's a lot easier to shoot above life size with a shorter lens. I mentored Macro Junkie and I know that all of his work, like mine, is hand held.

:/
So, the first 2 shots won't be a big problem with the 180mm as it is 1:1 too.
But the third and fourth will need higher mag.

Okay, a teleconverter can be expensive.
Well, I have bought tubes, standard ones, will see how well that will work.

I own some more lenses, a 16-105mm f3,5 - f5,6 and a 70-300mm f4 - f5,6.

Would you show me some more shots that are as close as you can get with an 180mm with the 1:1 mag. ?
Thank you a lot.

I need to be sure if this investment ist right, as it would cost me 640€.

About 1.5x [link]

IMHO the "fun" doesn't start until you hit about 2x to 3x:

Much easier to get there with Canon's EF-S 60mm...

I can possibly still switch to 90mm 2.8 or 60mm 2.0.

Hard decision.
I don't know, I don't think that I would be able to get a good flash if a drop the 180 and get the 90mm instead.

^the third and fourth shot is quite nice too.

Thank You.
Really hard decision.
