That was an amazing ride man! Seriously, 48 hours!? That is insane that you were able to pull off 12 great pages with such a good story too. I tip my hat to you man, this is quality, and I like the hint of the first time the fowl saw the hawk alright. And the prospect of fowl merchandise that was being produced is a great thought for us fans. Only a matter of time...

Seriously. I had it plotted out before hand, keep in mind.

As for Fowl merch... well, keep you eyes peeled it all I'm saying.

This, like so much of your stuff, is purely brilliant. Your storytelling just gets better and better.

That's one heck of a compliment, right there! Thank you kindly.

Squashy-Josh [2008-12-04 13:09:37 +0000 UTC]

Simply brilliant finale. The choice of angle for the last page is inspired, as was the choice to have Stephen still be in his Fowl personality while reading the article, despite being (more or less) out of costume. Chronologically, when is this set? Is it cannon?

Also, I'm curious about your choice of title for the story. I only have a brief understanding of the word Labarum, and the symbol associated with it, soI'm not entirely sure why you chose it. Unless the Labarum symbol is somehow linked to The Fowl's choice of the hawk. Enlighten me, please.

dan-sch In reply to Squashy-Josh [2008-12-04 19:49:33 +0000 UTC]

Well:

Labarum, as I'm sure you know, is the holy symbol Constantine saw in the sky, a sign from God that motivated him to win his greatest battle and bring Christianity to Rome. In this case, the hawk symbol is the Labarum, inspiring Ben to kick his personal weaknesses and try to spread the message of self-reliance to others around Parris City.

Also, this story is in continuity. Ben's rescue takes place sometime around the first Fowl issue, "Ex Libris", while Zhang's article is published sometime around the Tengu issue.

Kostmeyer [2008-12-03 21:54:58 +0000 UTC]

I really like this story - very impessive! Keeping the Fowl on the periphery while everyone talks about him is a fantastic way of building up the 'mythology' of the character. I think what I like most about this is the way that the tone is ambiguous - we're not told what to think here - both characters have a point and your 'voice' as the creator takes a back seat so that we can make up our own minds. Nice.

Thank you, sir. Since this was going to be read by my discerning core instructor, I wanted to be sure to bring a proper story to the game. Nice to hear I scored with you, at least.

Good question, Mr Journalist!

Bravo! Wonderful to see how the Fowl has affected other people's lives, even unintentionally. Super storytelling, Dan. And a nice treat to get to read a complete story in one go. Huzzah and a dozen s for you.

A thousand thank you's, madam. Speaking of which... how'd you feel about a my Mav and Fowl short story, say eight pages or so? I'm kicking some ideas around...

Without scaring you too much with my enthusiasm for the prospect of a Mav and Fowl mini-yarn, I'll just say that I am "very interested" in your proposal.

If you want to chat about it, feel free to kick your ideas over to my email: vigilantevale@yahoo.com

literacysuks1 [2008-12-03 15:31:10 +0000 UTC]

I know you said it was due to time constraints, but I think you should keep the black out of this...I really like the line look and it sets it apart from the main comic work. If it went for print I'd just suggest cleaning up this page and the last one, blacking in any instance of the fowl (for contrast, I suppose) and then printing that sucker.

But yeah, this was really awesome. Reminded me of the more down to earth episodes from BTAS, you've got the noir and dark without just seeming like you're trying really hard for it (unlike every bad batman comic from that period...)

dan-sch In reply to literacysuks1 [2008-12-03 19:10:01 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. I'll keep that in mind, that bit about about keeping the blacks out (whoops. I'm from the south and I have German last name. I'm not allowed to say that). And any comparison to BTAS makes my day ANY day.

Your writing is brilliant. I love the scene-setting bit on the first page.

Are you going to add this as an extra in a Fowl issue like the stock market one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dan-sch In reply to Inveighed [2008-12-03 19:02:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm considering it. There's some cleanup to be done here and here, but I would be handy to have half an issue already made in the event of a time crunch. I'll probably come up with some other short stories to pad it out.

Ah! And thank you.

zephrania [2008-12-03 09:42:41 +0000 UTC]

I loved this one. It was strong in an emotional sense, with a new perspective and side of humanity, as well as telling us a bit about the people, if they appreaciate him, how and what sort of a symbol the fowl plays in his own city.
As well as building up nicely to a background story.

Bravo.

I had to. I'm a creature of habit, what can I say?

You're right on the money with the hint of a story, by the way. One of the most important Fowl stories there is. I'll wait 'till I'm a little bit better to pull that one off.

And thank you for all the comments. I was hesitant wether or not to post this, since some of it was such a rush job. Glad year you dug it, at least a little.
