Description Well with finals and the holiday rush over.... I present KittyHawk, the Curtiss P40E Pegasus!

Kitty was a joint effort with my good pal because...without my knowing, he apparently loves the P40E as much as I love the Supermarine Spitfire lol.

The P40 went through numerous models early on in the war despite it's relatively short "practical" service life, eventually being overshadowed by naval fighters and ultimately the P51.  The P40E, which was designated the "KittyHawk", was the quintessential model of the P40 line, while earlier models included the WarHawk and TomaHawk.

What the P40 lacked in max ceiling and turn ability, it made up for in being a versatile heavy hitter, brandishing 6 .50 Cal machine guns.  The P40 was not only well armored, but also very capable of maintaining it's performance in the rugged terrain of the Pacific front which was known for its...less than ideal runways.

For America's first "iconic" fighter of the war, this is where my friend and I figured out the character of Kitty

actually developed her CM, which is a hawk breaking out of it's cage.  The idea was that the P40 was quite literally America's first response in air combat in WWII (not counting anything given during the Lend-Lease act)  The isolationist cage that was America was finally rattled by the attack on Pearl Harbor for the bird of prey to break out and seek it's revenge. (a bit corny maybe, but I can't help but love the idea.  Fits great to what the spirit of the P40 might be in my head)

KittyHawk as a pegasus ...probably had more backstory written than was ever originally intended >_>:
Kitty was born and raised in Canterlot, and despite the "regal" upbringing her parents provided her, she bonded more closely with her rough and tumble brother, TomaHawk.  As a result, Kitty has this dual nature to how she carries herself: with honor and class, but at the same time isn't afraid to get down and dirty for the causes she believes in.

(***insert more detailed backstory I'm saving for the comic ***)

...and so she wears an iconic face wrap, and ties her hair back when on duty to hide her identity....for reasons <_<

Kitty is based on the desert color schemes often seen during the North Africa campaign, sometimes referred to the Desert Shark pattern. (I wanted to avoid the olive drab Flying Tiger's scheme...because I can't keep using olive drab x_X)

I hope everyone enjoys her! I know she was a surprise to me.... if that makes any sense xD

(up next is a collection of draws for my meetup group's secret santa. We celebrate our hearth's warming party in the middle of Jan so I'll be busy making some of those for a bit.)

But when I finish those, another Axis Pegasus...but this time from outside the Luftwaffe >_>

The bandanna definitely was my favorite part. How could I ignore the iconic shark teeth of the P40E

OH yea dude! Another possibility could be a Fallschirmjager trooper as like the foil to the US Airborne. They've got some pretty iconic gear as well. Could be neat

Au just feel odd drawing a German WWII pony. They were soldiers fighting for their country too. I might have to do that.

DangerCloseArt In reply to Samoht-Lion [2015-04-20 22:20:35 +0000 UTC]

I hear ya. I always have a clear distinction between the Wehrmacht and the SS/Nazi party.  I'll never sympathize with the later.  But soldiers of the Wehrmacht (some enlisted before Hitler's time even) were your every day soldiers, just like any who fight for their country. They did what they could.  In some cases, they had no choice (Erwin Rommel for example.)

If you have yet to read All Quiet on the Western Front, I highly recommend it.  Or even the film adaptations (there's two i think. one in color, other being older).

haha thanks! Yea me and my friend thought it would be an amusing concept if one of the warponies lived a double life between her civilian lifestyle and service time.  That's kind of the secondary personal goal for me: I want each Warplane pegasus to not only represent the spirit of their respective aircraft, but also be uniquely characterized in their own right within what we might call "canon" Equestria.  Makes it more fun honestly for me haha

You  should do the P38 lighting or the P47 thunderbolt  both would look great and if you're tired of using olive drab you could always do the Navy F4U Corsair

DangerCloseArt In reply to oddball52 [2014-12-29 07:14:09 +0000 UTC]

They're all on the list ^_^ The next few I'm thinking will be some naval fighters for a change of color. So Pacific Theater patterns will be the basis for color schemes

How about doing Rainbow Dash as a P-80? Not only faster than anything but always late.

Also, it seems like a myth to me that America was isolationist before WWII. Roosevelt was pressuring Japan to get out of China, had cut off shipment of war materials and convinced many other countries to do the same. Does it make sense that Japan would have attacked us if we had been not interfering?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DangerCloseArt In reply to rio-grande [2014-12-29 07:31:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh we were pestering them economically/politically for months. America wasn't ignoring Japan's expansion of the late 30's; we knew what they were up to. The US public just didn't want another world war to send their boys into, especially when "it wasn't our problem".

But then Pearl Harbor...and everyone and their cousin wanted to volunteer. Good thing most of our Navy wasn't there...at least not any of our carriers, which had yet to prove themselves as the most valuable vessel of any convoy.  Japan had the right idea, and the perfect surprise... just not the targets they hoped for.
