I have not, mostly because I don't have plans for gas warfare or gas hazards in general for my story. So it never came up.

Kind of based my minecraft skin off the episode, still working on the chest plate still, still thinking its based off of the great war to end all wars

I can see what you mean. There's an element of regality to it with the buttons and stripes. Reminds me of the early war uniforms of the French and Germans.

Ooo, I love how this looks!
While I agree with the idea of having them keep their independent designs, I feel like a outfit would help make it seem more like an organized war, rather then just random people jumping in. There are still elements that you could customize with the outfits themselves, though!

Yeah, and if they don't work out, you can just not include them.

You could keep their personality as well as adding protection by using a special flak jacket just design it to look like a bomber jacket. Keeps them warm and offers protection. Although a headset perhaps in goggle form that calculates distance and speed to aid in the targeting processed would be invaluable. Even for experienced fighters judging how far to lead a target can be tricky.

Ah yes, a sort of HUD attachment. The "rear view mirror" attachment I have is kind of a precursor to that xD

I disagree with no helmet idea.
Protection against bullets is one thing. Protection against any other head traume in general is another one.
Why do you think tank crews and jet fighter pilots wear helmets ?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DangerCloseArt In reply to Scrap-Lord [2015-12-17 01:03:06 +0000 UTC]
True, but for the sake of modern pilots, they have the added bonus of HUD in their visors which returns their peripheral vision that would otherwise be obscured by such a bulky headpiece. (Also rigid helmets were introduced mainly to protect from ejection).
WWII fighter pilots (the era I'm calling reference to for my story) wore headgear, but they were minimal and mostly just housed their radio headsets, oxygen and kept them warm in their unpressurized cockpits. Since we've seen that Pegasi have some natural ability to breath in high altitudes, and are also apparently resilient to the cool air, in my *personal* opinion, they'd be redundant.
(also I want to avoid "storm trooper syndrome" where characters wearing full head covering helmets are often associated with being "disposable". Sort of like Star Trek "redshirts".)
just my personal take on it >_>

Scrap-Lord In reply to DangerCloseArt [2015-12-17 01:33:01 +0000 UTC]
Yeah sure. Cant argue with personal preferance, to each is their own.
But!
I never said anything about full face helmets.
Something simple would be enough.
At the speeds they are flying you wouldnt need the blade in the gauntlet, since it would be enough to fly around slapping enemies over the head with the gun casing to knock them out of the ait with cracked skull...
I mean hell, WW 2 tanker helmet would be enough to keep the head protected, it doesnt obscure the vision, it has mic+ueadphones installed, and it would definetly keep you safer than, hope, and CO's re-asurement that at least you werent associated as disposable.
But thats just my opinion, you do you pal...
not like I can make you do otherwise anyway xD

good good... now give her some kickass goggles and I say start put'n it on the assembly line. (what the goggles would be pointless? fine make them have some sort of target assist lens on them or something... I just want some awesome looking goggles on these ponies that's all)

Maybe not so much target assistance but range calculator for leading targets. Even with an experienced fighter figuring the distance a target should be lead is tricky.

Yeah, laser rangefinder would be nice....
But it would need a helmet with a computer to do anything with the info.

oddball52 In reply to Scrap-Lord [2015-12-14 22:54:43 +0000 UTC]
Well I was thinking something similar to what they use in fighters now. They could have it low profile by having wires running behind the ear into the goggles and just have a compact computer attached to the rigging. It would also double as a radio because you need to be able to direct fighters from the ground

That I agree with but it needs to be light and streamlined. Kevlar is out because it is heavy and could mess with flight maneuvers I think thin steel might work similar to ww1 Doughboy helmets and I can say from experience the ww1 helmets are a lot lighter than the Kevlar ones.

Scrap-Lord In reply to oddball52 [2015-12-15 09:22:26 +0000 UTC]
I dont mean a Kevlar helmet but a Fiberglass one. Not to stop bulets but just so the flyer dont end up caving their skull in by accident or in a crash...

Well they have to start somewhere it needs to be form fitting so it won't mess with aerodynamics l. Maybe a reinforced version of the old leather flight helmets

The armored strip on the upper foreleg of the cannon version along with the flack vest suggests an all-round design for defence against blunt and sharp melee as well as possibly ballistic defence.
There are elements of armor designs from medieval all the way up to modern times as well.

Yea I noticed that too. It's something my friend mentioned way back in Canterlot Wedding with the big changeling fight with the Mane 6: in the show, unless you're a unicorn, the entire mechanics of combat are straight up hoof-brawls.
Is it because it's a kid's show? Probably. But it's neat that the canon of the show continues that theme throughout.
