I remember these birds flying over where I lived long time ago.

An epitome of an awkward jet. However, the curious form of the plane is oddly captivating, especially the frontal section of the craft. Well captured!

Is that a licensed version of the Avro CF-100 Canuck, or was the Canuck a licensed version of that?

Neither are true, this is an entirely different design to the CF-100 and have no relation to each other. This is in fact a variant of the Glostor Meteor which was Great Britain's very first jet fighter. The variant in my photograph is a later night fighter variant built by Armstrong Whitworth but the original gloster built variants were a much earlier design and in fact entered service before the end of world war two.

Thanks very much! She is slightly ungainly, but in my opinion no where near as ugly as it is said to be. Personally I kind of like the long nose and bird cage canopy. She still looks futuristic even now, after so many years in retirement.

There are a few aircraft that I fall in love with instantly like Spitfires, Harriers, JSF, Raptors, Bf 109, Hawker Hunters, Mustangs, P40 Tomahawks, the MH 53 helos etc. But this may just have joined the list. I did not like the original Meteor but this added nose, which presumably has more advanced radar, simply makes its very elegant. The aircraft has a very retro loo with its wings, the nacelles, the nose and even the cockpit. It looks, for lack of a better term, like a 23rd century starship. It is so elegant and beautiful.

You are the first person I can remember that has thought that way. Most seem to think these Night Fighter variants built by Armstrong Whitworth are ugly due to their long nose and bird cage canopy. Personally for me the F.8 variant is my personal favourite, but like you I do not see this variant as ugly in the slightest.

I wouldn't really call it ugly. Just not the prettiest. I think it looks fine except for the nose. We have a new Meteor flying now. It only flew for the first time last week. Hopefully I will capture her in a similar pose at some point. It's the one here. [link] Still not as good looking as the F.8 but still not bad looking. [link]

I've always felt the Brits had a different aesthetic than Americans when it comes to aircraft design. Β A lot of their designs just seem to be very plainly utilitarian. Β Must be a difference in our national characters or something lol
