Ten years ago. Wow. A beautiful aircraft. I see from my fave that I thought so first time around, too.

Was watching a British Sci-fi movie called "Satellite in the Sky" today and it started off with this Avro flying around an airbase where they were going to launch a nuclear-powered spaceship into the stratosphere.  It was painted a pale blue as if it was a test bed for research.  But when I watched the leading man of the movie climbing down the entry ramp, I couldn't believe how small the plane was.  Then while watching it going through its paces at first, I thought how it could be reborn as a stealth strike aircraft, with a revamping of the shape for better radar avoidance, better engines, and updated ECM gear.

I've seen the Avro several times in movies, and familiar with the Handley-Page as a in-flight tanker during the Falklands skirmish.  But I don't believe I've ever seen the Vickers Valiant.  Do you have a photo of her?

Perfect shot, totally unique. Sometimes the overcasts create great lighting for us.

Yet another outstanding photograph.  Hue* and colour balance are perfect, with the central white and black details providing a strong focal point, while the red of the insignia successfully avoid it being a monotone. They draw the eyes from the focal point to either wing, after which the moth-like form of this amazing aircraft lead the viewer on a little guided tour. Step back to view the whole, and the detail in the cloud is just enough.. neither distracting nor too dull.   Again : Exceptional Daniel   ..many of us have a great deal to learn from your work.

* ..colour meanings - "Blue is the colour of trust and peace. It can suggest loyalty and integrity as well as conservatism".  In this instance perhaps 'peace' should read 'peace-keeper"

The last of its kind, really nice capture. Btw there is an amazing british documentary which "stars" this iconic aircraft: "Falklands' Most Daring Raid".
Thumbs up for the photo

Daniel-Wales-Images In reply to YnX [2013-02-08 19:42:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! I'm sure I have seen that documentary at some point. I think it's shown occasionally on either the History channel or Discovery. As for the aircraft, she is only the last airworthy of her kind. There are many other on display in museums such as Duxford, Cosford, Newark etc. Although obviously being able to see her fly makes her somewhat special. Sadly it looks as though 2013 will be her last in terms of being an airworthy aircraft. I believe she needs some major maintenance after and unless a major sponsor is willing to fund the work which is doubtful she will be grounded after. So if by chance you get to see her this year, make the most of the opportunity.

Thank you! I got quite wet just after this was taken, but it was worth it. Luckily managed to get the camera gear in the dry before it started chucking it down though.

One of my friends always gets to Leuchars and was really down beat about the prospect of a wet show a couple of years ago. Apart from the danger of water on the gear there are some advantages. The air is moist and you have a chance of vorticies and more especially skys like this one as a backdrop. Critique's not bad either ! as I agree there too!!

It made for a good photograph but I had to get my camera gear packed up pretty sharpish. All I can say is that storm wasn't so awesome.

A great aircraft! Amazing to think that it flew across the Atlantic to get to the Falklands!

And is that a thunderstorm on the way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daniel-Wales-Images In reply to StormfalconX [2011-02-21 20:47:58 +0000 UTC]

I don't think there was thunder, but a storm it most definitely was. I and everybody else at that show got completely soaked. The only benefit was that due to the on coming storm the vulcan performed a steep take off to avoid the storm. [link]
