Description I just can't help myself x3
The character sheet is just growing and growing and I have such confidence that I finally nailed the Legionnaire design that I want for the Naronian soldiers. Their helmets are infamous in the entire realm for opening the soldier to any strikes but the ones coming from right above or across the cheeks. This shows how much audible commands matter in the imperial army. Pretty much like the roman helmets, the ears are uncovered to allow the soldier to hear the waves and shifts of the battle, and also follow and understand the precise signals from the hornblowers.

I prefer closed helmets like bascinet due to their protection value but this one looks good, its quite vulnerable to stabs however.

The armor has a nice amount of decoration so im guessing its for a high ranking class, it lacks protection for the limbs which is quite common on earlier armors, this lack of protection is a good reason for swords designed for slashing being a quite popular sidearm.

Scales looks better than mail but i've heard that mail offers a better protection.

It's pretty hard to close a helmet when having a long snout poking out, at least without making it look utterly ridiculous.
Even as such helmets does exist in this world, it's not something that's done for mere legionnaires. Its vulnerability is explained above.
It's actually not a high rank class. This is the ordinary legionnaire uniform. The earlier armor (which I have a reference for in my gallery) is much much simpler and of inferior materials. Since the fall of Vanerheims wall and the opening of the road of Krothan, the material wealth of the imperial army skyrocketed.
The lack of armor over legs and arms harken back to the Roman attitude of only protecting immediately critical areas while putting faith in the big shield for limb protection.
What might look like scales is actually lamellar. It doesn't open like scales does and distributes the shock of blows very well. The downside is that it often needs repair and new leather strings.

Yes i saw the explanation, it makes sense, open helmets were common at that time, they would probably manage to create a helmet that works on people with beaks or snouts if they existed in real life(they were quite creative), closed helmets werent used that much at that time anyways, unless its based on a period where great helms were already invented but great helms usually had a lot of downsides, the biggest advantage of open helmets is that it allows you to draw the character's face while giving him/her head protection.

I see, that could have an intimidating effect, a decorated armor could mean that the armor is very good so the wearer isnt going down easily.

Not to mention that their formations also reduced the chances of being attacked in vulnerable areas.

Oh lamellar, i confused it which scales at first, lamellar is strong enough to stop most attacks.

Did you base parts of the armour on any existing pieces, or did you come up with everything yourself?
Either way it looks really good!

Took some inspiration from both Roman, japanese and turkish examples. But the overall design is my own. Thanks ^^

He looks like a cross between a gladiator and viking. Great job on this work, Dano.

Gods, this is pure eye candy for me! The Naronian armor is the most badass thing ever.

By the way, what is the chestpiece made of? is it some kind of lamellar or just colored metal?

It's supposed to be lackered steel plate. The chest area is actually rather inspired by japanese armor. The two lobstered pieces hanging over the armpits are made of boiled leather. They are also patterned so that soldiers from different Naronian regiments can recognize each other. It's a kind of code system that they secretly use to root out spies or other infiltrators that might be using stolen or looted armor.

Oooooh! I'm loving this armor design! I'm just curious, does the Naronian army have a one-size-fits-all helmet for all species? Or do they try to accommodate?

Every facility has an array of craftsmen that fits the helmets and other pieces to every individual legionnaire. Besides, during the upbringing of every soldier, they learn how to create, modify and refit armor. That way they can make due with most spare equipment in harsh times.

Ah, that's smart! Give each soldier the means to equip themselves.
