Before I get to my ranting, I should state that is Alex in the last panel, and she was in What Do the Shadows Hide . I'll discuss her character at a time when I don't have real life stuff to rant about.

This comic is, well, REVENGE. It is based upon actual events, of which I have a witness! ...who I don't think is on DA. But he was there!

Anyway, in Graphic design, we often have to use a mounting spray to attach our print outs to boards for critiques. This spray mount isn't good to breath in, as is the case with many sprays, so the college provides a specially ventilated room for spraying stuff. It is small and shared by all.

Shortly before a class, I had to use the booth, and found it empty. It's much easier to work if one uses both of the tiny tables available, so I went ahead and was using both. Then some other student, followed by a teacher who apparently approved of his actions and a huge line of others, came in to use a spray to preserve charcoal drawings.

There was NO politeness, there was no asking to move things, there was just "I'm taking over this space and I'm spraying, and if it's in the direction of you, so be it". I would have cleared everything from one of the tables for them if asked, but they didn't, and this guy was going to put his drawings and such right on top of my stuff, WHICH, by the way, I had already sprayed with that sticky spray mount. I stopped him and moved my stuff, but... argh. And I had other people in my class who needed to use the booth, but this drawing class was primed to just bully their way in, apparently with teacher consent.

And before anyone says "well, dude, you took both tables, what do you expect?" As I said, it's easier if both tables are there when spray mounting to use both tables. One to spray stuff on, one to apply the sprayed things to the board; it vastly reduces the odds of making a mess of the board. Also, it is most common to have the room to one's self; this was a freak occurrence in my experiences with the room. And most importantly of all, I would have instantly moved my stuff and relinquished a table if given the opportunity, but I wasn't. They were happy to just plop their stuff right on top of mine without giving me the chance to move or get out of the way of their spray. Considering I have a mild (ha!) fear of toxic sprays, it's a wonder I didn't flip out.

This isn't the only charcoal related incident, either. A friend of mine had someone put their charcoal stuff right on top of hers under similar circumstances (which is worse than it sounds if you're not familiar with charcoal; charcoal is really messy). In my life drawing class, someone left like a snowfall's worth of charcoal on an easel, an easel with a dark stand making that charcoal invisible, with the end results being me and my drawing pad covered in the stuff. I was ticked off most of the rest of that day.

Apparently there are a LOT of inconsiderate charcoal users at my college o_O

EDIT: Sadly, my vengeance was tainted somewhat by the unfortunate fact that my graphics editor saw fit to distort the comic. It was much thinner vertically and a little thinner horizontally, resulting in a non-proportionate resize. Resizing is one thing, but non-proportionate? That bird won't fly!

I've actually noticed that a large majority of art students are very inconsiderate and selfish. My girlfriend had a similar problem at her school. Only her assholes were ceramics majors; playing with her pottery, leaving tools lying around, not sealing up or putting away glaze tubs. Now I'm not saying all art majors are assholes just a large majority of them. So I can understand how you feel.

I can sympathize. I often have to make and mount posters on foam core. I am forced to go outside the building. I know that the 3M adhesive I use is a pain. The hairs on my arms always wind up feeling sticky in a creepy way.
Ciao

Good grief! I hate those sprays, they're one of the pieces of the art tool world that I absolutely cannot use (I have severe Multiple Chemical Sensitivity -- you think *you're* paranoid about toxic sprays?? That stuff would put me in hospital were it not for the fact that the air in hospitals makes me so sick that I can't go into one unless I'm basically going to die if I don't...), but to have a place that's meant to make them as safe as possible for those who can use them, and then disregard all safety precautions as well as the integrity of someone else's artwork...

...well, all I can say is that you're right. No jury OF YOUR PEERS would convict, that's for certain.

I'm glad you got your revenge. If it had been me, I'd have done FAR worse to them -- -- as much as I could, that is, before I either collapsed, stopped breathing, or passed out... *sigh*

Meanwhile, I'm really enjoying the character development. Wow, another Dan Shive comic to read! Whee!

The fine arts students really are inconsiderate towards the ADSN students when it comes to using the spray booth that's for sure... it is so tiny with just those two tables... The other week I was mounting some stuff and there was this fine arts guy just spraypainting designs the walls and the floors (as if they haven't been sprayed enough) and he was polite enough to hold of spraying for 30 seconds upon my entry then went right at it again... and it was the strongest, foulest smelling spray paint I've ever witnessed...

...personally... I think we should get a spray booth for the ADSN dept. only....

In that case, it is totally justified--both beating him on the head with a spray can and making a satirical comic about the whole incident.

Ahh, the (non)joys of using charcoal. X_X;;
Sounds like you had a far bigger spraying room than we did; ours was more like a small outhouse than a "room"... I have to say, though, it sounds more like not thinking than inconsiderateness ^_^;; I mean, if they put their drawings on top of a freshly sprayed one, your drawing is going to stick to theirs; they might even have to tear it off, which'll ruin their paper.

As for getting covered in charcoal.. I'm surprised you're not already used to it. After all, if you rub your face at all after using soft charcoal, or smearing it with your fingers, you're gonna have a charcoaly face rather quickly. I quickly learned to wear black pants clothes drawing classes.

Swap the charcoal-fixing spray they use for a dummy one that will actually explode and cover all their work in something. Maybe a huge cloud of charcoal dust collected from easels. Mwahahahahaaaaaa

I'd grab my stuff just in time, then place it on top of theirs.

With a big, sweeping motion, to make sure damage is done to their art... and the back of mine (because who gives a *something* about that?).

Then act as if nothing happened, and when confronted, act really really surprised.

'Oh! Hey, there was nothing there but my own stuff just a few seconds ago, I must have not heard you when you asked if you could use that table. Wait, that's probably because... you didn't! Gosh! Sorry for expecting others to be considerate!'

I'd bear my injuries with pride.

Second Panel: Worst dialouge ever? Maybe not but it doesn't make any sense. Venting some?

DanShive In reply to Ankhareon [2008-03-03 06:24:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, a jolly slap in the face to you, too.

What doesn't make sense about it? He's forcing his way in (OUT OF MY WAY), he considers his task more important than hers (NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN), and he's using a spray to preserve his charcoal drawing (THE PRESERVATION OF MY CRAPPY CHARCOAL DRAWING).

Other than the fact that it's clearly over the top for comedic reasons (just look at his face in panel 3) and the inclusion of the word "CRAPPY" to describe his own work, what he's saying makes perfect sense.

And yes, I am venting. Notice the huge rant that went with the comic?

Ankhareon In reply to DanShive [2008-03-03 08:26:57 +0000 UTC]

Thankee kindly sir

I said it probably "wasn't" the worst dialouge ever (I have seen muchworse), but it still rather bad in that it's really isn't something I can ever see someone saying.
Before you point out (again) it's obviously not supposed to be realistic I'll explain that it's (obviously) never a problem I've had - I don't identify with the rant so I don't find it funny - I get that it's something that would be frustrating but having never observed something similar I just see it as lack of subtlety rather than actual comedy.

Much like some poem I read. I'm assured the writer was influential but I see him as a talentless hack because I don't identify with his work and just read it at face value, conciously ignoring the metaphor.

(...No I'm not saying you're a talentless hack. I'm saying he is.)
