Description "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier

In my eyes one of the most subtle, beautiful and romantic lovestories ever.

The concept of this shot is probably as old as books themselves - but I couldn't resist. So yes, sue me for being clichΓ©!

Alot of post-processing done.
Entry for ~WordoftheWeek 's contest on the word "book".

btw., I GOTTA protest your sig. "All art is quite useless"? Even the fact that Oscar Wilde said it doesn't make that right.
Or is there some hidden meaning I'm overlooking?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Squarix In reply to dareme [2007-12-11 13:00:33 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I believe he meant just what he said

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dareme In reply to Squarix [2007-12-11 13:42:12 +0000 UTC]

But it ISN'T. Art serves a purpose ... it makes the unusual visible to normal people, it pictures the future and thereby helps bringing it along, it brings beauty where there was dullness, it inspires visions and dreams and can show new possibilities and ways that would never have been discovered without it. How is it useless?

(I'm in a mood for discussion. Please discuss. )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Squarix In reply to dareme [2007-12-11 14:02:15 +0000 UTC]

Well he's the one who said it, not me. I actually believe that art is useless to everyone except the person doing it.

What purpose does a painting, or a picture serve? In reality, isn't it just a piece of paper that's been prettied on? Yes. But it's the human reaction to it that makes it worth something. The response that comes from it is what matters, not the art itself. The heart that the artist poured into it, toiling years his life away. It's not the pretty paper that matters - that's just the end product. It's just a physical way for someone to express pure emotion. A machine could probably paint a masterpiece in a few hours, if that's what it was programmed for. But would it be worth anything? So art doesn't matter, but the human part of it does.

Sorry, I would offer a better debate if I hadn't just tumbled out of bed

I think you're doing a pretty good job. If I'd just gotten up, I'd not be half as witty.

(One doesn't normally quote a phrase without commenting it when one doesn't agree ... so I assumed you must agree with Oscar's statement to some degree, which is why I asked you to argue his point.)

I really like your point, but I disagree. :giggles: Unarguably, the piece of art has a value for the creator - namely the emotional (or whatever you call it) that you described. But it has value for the viewer as well.
(A note on political correctness: I'm going to just repeat "him" referring to "the viewer" by which I mean both "him" and "her". )
1. Art broadens his horizon by showing him a bit of someone else's (the artists) personality
2. Art may show him a view on life he's never thought of before but that occurs to him the moment he sees it expressed (he thereby learns and grows)
3. Art can be a vision - which will even the path for the future to come. Why do many artists become famous after they're dead? - Because they're thinking ahead of their time, and the value of their art is only recognized as such when the minds of "normal people" have moved up to that state, which sometimes takes many years. But would the broad public ever have arrived at this state of mind (which I'll call equivalent to "progress") if the artist hadn't led the way?

Where on the globe are you? It's dusk over here in Europe.

Loves it! Pitty about the grass (?) in front of it.

But lovely picture none the less. And I like the focus of it.

And I congratulate you on your non-obtrusive watermark. Those things can become quite anoying.

dareme In reply to Mickey-Mouse [2007-06-15 07:22:37 +0000 UTC]

I acctually placed the book in the grass on purpose, cos I wanted to create a picknick-like atmosphere - sitting outside reading a book on a sunny day. But you're right that the grass doesn't acctually do much good in this photo. My original idea was more like this , but then I decided I liked the other shot better.

Thanks so much for the comment!

I know just what you mean with the watermarks. I always try to make them subtle, but still not so easy to remove.

I think this would make an awesome background for either a dvd menu or a opening credit. Possibly a digital portfolio. It must be the processing.
Either way. Cool.

Bis jetzt dacht ich ja, mein Wortschatz sei nicht ΓΌbel, aber du belehrst mich eines Bessern. Was heisst "kadriert"?

Danke.
