dark-precipice — Oddly Fitting TFLN: Whatever The Hell This Is by-nc-nd

Description Hint: it's absinthe. The color of which I took a lot of liberties with.

And this is my hello to Dr. Henry Jekyll aka Mr. Edward Hyde's better half! Welcome to the ray of light that is my attention! It's awful; you're gonna love it.

P.S. - the hat symbolizes both Jekyll's position in society and its role in the fulfillment of Hyde's supposed-to-stay-hidden desires. Also, it's really fun to draw.

***

We have this joke in Bulgaria:

See here, I don't drink often, or a lot... but one drink is enough to turn me into a different person, and that other person, now HE drinks lots and lots.

Sound familiar, doesn't it... especially in the context of 'Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde', which can easily be interpreted as a metaphor for addiction...

Let's just say there's a reason I call the secret component for Jekyll's potion 'magical cocaine' (no really, check this out: cocaine increases alertness, feelings of well-being and euphoria, energy and motor activity, feelings of competence and sexuality; anxiety, paranoia and restlessness can also occur, especially during the comedown; with excessive dosage, tremors, convulsions and increased body temperature are observed - those of you who have read the book might discover this sounds eerily familiar).

Another interesting tidbit is the color of Jekyll's weird potion - it turns red like wine (classy, harmless in moderation and even healthy, for the transformation into good ol' Jekyll) and green like absinthe (ill-reputed and intoxicating, for the transformation into Hyde; also, absinthe is said to cause a 'clear-headed' feeling of inebriation — a form of 'lucid drunkenness', which is quite similar to the way Jekyll felt as Hyde).

***

Unrelated-to-the-drawing-but-not-quite-that-unrelated: Hokova is the daughter of Edward Hyde and Satine from Moulin Rouge. Also, I am descended from Herbert West, but that is neither here nor there.

Now the weird thing is that this particular crossover might actually work, give or take a couple of years or decades... Imagine Dr. Jekyll going on a pleasure trip to Paris.

I'd rather draw the Creature again... Victor is not exactly a favorite of mine.

And, like my habit is want, I imagine him being lost to the Button Moulder, again.

Well, that's fair. And from the video, Jekyll is actually a better mad scientist archetype than Victor.

Btw, finally got some more Inktober art on here...

So the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was really about Jekyll's love affair with the green fairy?

I understand that the reputation of absinthe is more or less invention. I've had the stuff myself, from a bottle obtained in the Czech Republic, and if it was anything different in effects than strong whisky I didn't notice.

dark-precipice In reply to monoceros4 [2014-03-15 18:26:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes. It could be interpreted that way.

I think absinthe's bad reputation comes mostly from the fact that it was once really cheap and contained all kinds of bad stuff that could mess up a person's health... like most strong liquors when drunk in huge quantities.

Hello, hat. \o/

Also, all love for Jekyll's face. So cute. :3

Thanks! X3 Jekyll turned out very fun to draw.

According to Hokova, at least. Then again, she mentioned Wilbur, Pickman, Carrie, and Amalthea as possible relatives.

Also, the plane is on autopilot.

Cleverrr. Shade would approve.

I know.

It's important for people to know how much dirt I've dug up for the sake of a joke. So yeah, heal thyself, doctor... but not with alcohol/drugs.

Yes. Because it led me to a rather clever crossover, of which everyone should be aware. Plus, I wanted to flaunt mine.

Speaking of which, Shade ought to learn some new tricks. Spiking someone else's drink is easy, especially when you have access to their reserves.

*does three hours of research* 'Okay, now I can make that joke!'

Not that I don't approve.
That again leads me to think about how would something we did together end up...

She's still a kitten, give her a break.

dark-precipice In reply to Hokova [2014-03-14 13:36:13 +0000 UTC]

BEEP! Wrong.
The 'revelations' actually came up to me a while ago... The substance abuse comparison was among the first ones, I got the feeling while reading the novel for the first time (which was like years ago; I think this is why I don't like the novel as much as I want to, not even now, since I've been practically raised to despise people without self-control and addicts); the cocaine comparison came some time after, I think after you reminded of the novel's existence and I decided to dig into it; the absinthe-and-wine comparisons are the most recent (around the time of the Hyde-and-Satine talk).

Depends on whether the idea gets explored further or not.

Is she? I wouldn't've know.

Why noooot?

It says that from ages 3-6 months, 'kittens will start establishing their place in the "social ranking order" of your house during this time. It is not unusual to see a kitten "challenge" the alpha cat, which usually will earn the hapless youngster a cuff on the ears'.

They weren't just thoughts with Hyde.

"What are you planning to do with me, you sick twisted creature?"
I don't know what you're talking about.
"You know what I'm talking about... that story of yours..."
Which one?
"Wait, there's two?"
Yup.
"Is that bastard Gray going to be in it?"
Of course, dummy.
"Well fuck."

Both Hyde and Jekyll questioned my sudden interest in them... with Jekyll expressing hope that I will leave him out of it as much as possible.

BTW, do you do things like this? 'Talk' with the characters while drawing them?

Hokova In reply to dark-precipice [2014-03-14 17:34:32 +0000 UTC]

I'd be afraid myself.

No, that makes it awkward. I dun' want anyone to talk into what I draw, and MOSTLY not the subject of the drawing.

A completely natural reaction, regardless of who's doing the writing.

True. But you're more dangerous because you're one of the better writers.

Also you disregard any and all privacy and personal space. (Not that you're the only one)

dark-precipice In reply to Hokova [2014-03-15 19:15:42 +0000 UTC]

Ah, 'occasionally'. As long as it's not 'often' or 'usually'.

I'd love to, but I've forgotten most of them. Or I can give you some samples from today's drawing:

Me: Do you think this suit is baggy enough?
Hyde: At least you ditched the ugly scarf.
Me: I was asking about the suit.
Hyde: I hate the shirt collar.
Me: I'm thinking about giving you short hair.
Hyde: This isn't short.
Me: It's shorter than it was before.
Hyde: Why do I have to be in the back?
Me: Because you're the smallest.
Hyde: ... yes, quite logical. :V
Me: I know, right. Oops, I've been drawing your hair on Dorian's layer.
Hyde: Haaah- ha!
Me: It's okay, at least I noticed in time...
Hyde: I liked the previous version of this drawing better.
Me: I don't.

Meanwhile...

Dorian: Oooh, Count Dracula, you're so tall and mysterious and (I guess) experienced~
Dracula: Stop touching me.
