Description My first try on HDRI lighting and "realistic" modelling. After all the darkness in my last piece Machinae I decided to make something totally different and tried myself on superclean modelling and nice lighting. I really hope you can give me some feedback if you like it...or not.

You know... I hate to be a nay-sayer... but I think the shadows are far too sharp to look 100% realistic. What kind of lighting did you use for them?

I always find ' distant light ' , or ' Sun ' ( depending on your 3D package ) helps blur the harsh edges enough to make things appear more ' real world ' light setup.

Love the design, though! I agree.. I'd love to see a walk cycle of that little beast - PURE ' Mars Rover ' material!

And the reflection is very good.... nice touch rather than the matte background normally used in product shots...

Great work! Keep it up! Have you ever thought of doing some designs and models for a ' Robo-Dungeon ' kinda game? Drop me a message if you are interested in something like that...

It likely means nothing to you, but just in case - Angband, Omega, Mechforce.... all inspirations towards ' the ultimate MUD ' ... in 3d ( Perhaps similar to Rappelz? ) Hopefully I'll need about 20 base character models ( organic and inorganic ( from Clockworks to Golems ) ) and HOPEFULLY 2-300 monster models... all matrixable to exponentiate ( what a GREAT word! ) one's possible adversaries... ie: An ' Heavy Armoured Fire Orc Chieftain ' each adjective adding another layer to the challenge of the beast...

Anyway.. drop me a line if you can.

Of course
Rendered in Yafray, though.

hi mike... great work, and i not say it only because we're both deviants, also i say it because im a robotics student and i think you design is pretty realistic

may you help me with the design for a school project? of course if you agree

darkMyke In reply to nikhil [2006-01-24 19:39:29 +0000 UTC]

It *is* rigged. However, the rig is awful and only helped me to align the legs for a still image. I'd have to redo it completely for a proper walk cycle. And it will take some time until I do that, sorry =/
(on a side note, I'd love to see it walking around myself ).

Do you mean the programme? Well, all the modelling was done in Blender, the rendering in Yafray. Both are very awesome freeware tools that you should check out if you're interested in 3D stuff, too.

I think what =Betelgeux said way early on is appropriate; you show great attention to detail. Rendering these types of models with HDRI is beyond my scope and present ability, although, I can say everything in here looks quite awesome. I think the actual model/ Nanobot guy is really cool too.

i must ask, how long do you spend on each one of these pieces? from the looks of things i would guess you are quite meticulous with detail, though i don't know for sure...

i enjoy the cleanliness and "minimalism" created here. it's something that matches up as well with 3d renders as peanut butter does with jelly.

even with all the minute detail and all the visually weight in the render, the background creates a fine balance. almost therapeutic.

the font selection for labels and such compliments the overall appearance quite nicely. i can tell you were methodical and alert with your design. very very nice job! =]

...in the spirit of being helpful, the one thing i might suggest is going even further with detail next time.

...not to downplay what you've done already, of course, because i find it delectable already! =]
