I've always been a fan of butterflies and thistle, but this is exemplary work! Nice choice - I like the sun shining through the butterfly wings, very nice!

Amazing shot!
I'm insanely jealous. I've been trying to capture a shot of a yellow swallowtail all summer long. There are three that hang out at my friends house and frolic in his garden all day long. But all of them have been extremely camera shy, even when I sit still for 20 minutes at a time near their favorite flowers...

You need a zoom lens! That's how I got this shot. Sigma makes a pretty good, and fairly inexpensive 70-300mm with a Canon mount. For well under $300, you can take butterfly shots as much as you like.

Ahhhhh. My zoom lens is a 35-80mm. That would explain my problem. I have to get too close and I spook them!

How you managed to sit on this one for so long is beyond me, Steve. I would have died to get it online as fast as I could. The light behind it's wings is so beautiful. The flower itself is awesome but the light on that butterfly just rocks my boat to the fullest extent possible! This is truly a shot where it takes time to look it over. Once you get over the beauty of the light, then and only then are you able to take in the beauty of the butterfly's colors and the flower. Most fantastic!

I guess I kept it under wraps for so long because the lighting was really tricky and it took a pretty good amount of postwork to even out the exposure and clean up the noise in the shadows. Plus there was a tree branch that needed to be cloned out. I initially thought it wasn't able to be fixed, but when I looked at it again recently the rest of it just sort of came together and I realized I had a pretty good image after all.

You truly do have a fantastic shot. Isn't it funny how that happens? What we think is not going to be a great one, ends up being one of the very best in our galleries.

Two of my favourit things in one photo I love thissle and I adore butterflys, each have a special meaning to me. I have nerver seen both captured in such a wonderful way. I love the soft lighting and the simplicity of it all. Wonderful Job, a fav. for me.
