this reminds me of a series of books I once read about a civilization of people who each had special talents given to them by an animal spirit and the main characters spirit animal was a crow which was the spirit of death. They were amazing books by Jerry Smith Ready you should read them if you havent already the first book was called the Eyes of Crow
