Description I've never tried painting animals with wet media before; since my box of Caran d'Ache has only been used twice since I bought it in 2007, it seemed like a good time to move way out of my comfort zone and learn something new.

This is for you, . Thanks for letting me use your photo for practice. [Even if I mangled it...]

Watercolour pastels, with a touch of acrylics and colour pencil on Fabriano 200g cold pressed watercolour paper. 18x24cm.

Ah-HA! So you *have* been rifling through my dresser. Don't deny it! I have proof!1

Very well done, Farsky. I'd never have suspected this was a traditional work unless I'd read your comments.

Hey, it's those two famous "holding hands" otters! You know... I *was* contemplating drawing that. THEN you'd have been absolutely convinced I've been rooting through your stuff.

Thanks very much, Linda.

With practice, any medium can be conquered I love the blues and neutrals here... the ripples in the front are especially strong.

OTTER!!! One of my all-time favorite animals!! They are so delightful to watch as they play in the surf and kelp beds--this is awesome! I have to strenuously agree with here--you did NOT mangle it, in any way: the fur looks positively lush (as it is in real life), the water looks terrific--beautiful handling of the light... And with his mouth open and the teeth visible, he may well be dining on the remains of an abalone here (we just don't see the shell, as he's already discarded it! ). All around a beautiful piece, Far, and one I just adore! Well done with the paint--your skills in digital translate flawlessly (but then, we all knew they would! )!

Thank you very much, FF! I wouldn't call it "digital skills translating flawlessly", not by a long shot! but at least it's actually showable, unlike the handful of hideous watercolour disasters I've piled up along the way...

I would very much like to see a real otter. [And share an abalone - I like abalone too.] The only ones I've seen are in video. How's that for a pathetic city kid...

I have a hard time, my friend, imagining a pile of anything but wonderful artwork from your hands...we all have a tough time trying new media (I take the easy road, mind--I just don't try any! lol! ). Someone once told me: never throw anything away--there's always something you can learn, from anything you draw. I hope you got that same advice!

And if you ever take a trip to San Francisco, California, make a point of heading down to Monterey, CA (a short distance south): that's where the dense kelp beds are, and it's a great place to see sea otters. They're still in Alaskan coastal waters, too, I believe, though their numbers are small. They're beautiful little creatures--always chattering to themselves and their companions, rolling themselves into the kelp to eat or sleep. I hope you get to see one someday (and then you'll see what a great job you did with this! )!

I *did* warn that there might be a sea monster. Anybody who disregards that piece of information does so at their own peril.

What, no Abalone on his belly?
Btw, I don't think you mangled it at all. I find watercolors so hard to work with, but you pulled it off beautifully. It's the right medium for such a soft subject.

DarthFar In reply to tanabatablossom [2009-02-28 03:27:53 +0000 UTC]

You can go do an abalone version.

Thanks very much, Bats. Watercolour pastels are even more bizarre than standard watercolours, I tell you! I can mix colours fine when they're dry, but the moment you add water... everything comes out different.
