Description
Percy jerked awake as something bumped into her lower ribs. The mare’s eyes snapped open, though what she saw confused her sleepy brain for a moment. The field the herd was resting in was alight with yellow glows. There was momentary panic when she thought they might have been embers from a fire, but as one landed on her face she realized it was merely fireflies. Hundreds of them, possibly thousands! She’d never witnessed such a gathering of them in her young life.
A scared nicker drew her attention to her side, realizing then that Helios was trying to press himself further into, and possibly underneath, her body. His blue eyes were wide with surprise and fear as the insects circled him. One even made to land on his nose, but he shook his head to keep it off.
Percy giggled, reaching over to nuzzle and comfort her son. He jumped a bit at her touch, something that she was still getting used to. She didn’t voice it, but it hurt her a little whenever he flinched away from her. She knew it was because he was hypersensitive to touch given his impairment, if he didn’t have his eyes on you, he jumped. It was understandable, it made perfect sense, but it didn’t stop it from hurting.
Helios blinked, looking at his mother and smiling as she nuzzled him. The colt looked between her and the flying lights that were surrounding him, clearly looking for an answer.
It was times like this that Percy so dearly wished her baby could hear, she would love to tell him all the stories she was told as a foal about fireflies. She smiled sadly at that thought, before a little voice in her head encouraged her to tell him anyway. It might have been silly, but as she looked at her son’s curious and patient face, she decided to speak to him regardless.
“Those are fireflies. They won't hurt you baby, I promise.” She spoke clearly, looking at him directly in hopes he would somehow understand. Reaching out, she touched one of the closer fireflies, the insect landing on her muzzle. Giggling as it tickled her fur, she leaned down to show Helios. He studied the small bug, wonder in his eyes as he watched the slow blink of its tail. After a moment, the firefly flew up and away, joining the others swirling in the air around them.
Percy got her son’s attention again, speaking slowly to him once more, “Some say that fireflies glow because they catch falling stars on their tails. They come out at night so they can try to fly the star back up into the sky - but the stars are too heavy and they fall back down. That’s why you see some up in the air, and others resting in the grass to regain their strength.” She smiled when she was done, then took her leg and gently distrubed some of the grasses around them. A small cloud of fireflies flew up into the air, swirling around the horses before flying up into the sky.
Helios watched his mother intently, seemingly like he was trying to understand her words. When she flushed the fireflies out of the grass, he was once again in complete awe, watching them float overhead and up into the sky. In his attempts to watch them, he over balanced on his still somewhat twisted legs and toppled over. But, before his mother could worry, he rolled himself up and got back to his feet. He looked over at her, a proud look on his face. His mother smiled brightly back at him, nuzzling him and pulling him into her in a hug.
Percy was so proud of her baby’s recovery, and so grateful that Fletcher had stood up for him against Camilla and Ambrosia’s heartless suggestions. Helios just needed time, understanding, and a little extra help. Now, he was getting stronger and bigger by the day, and she doubted anything would stop him from growing into a strong, handsome stallion some day. Cuddling her baby one more time, she encouraged him to go back to sleep. He would need his rest, as Percy had overheard Fletcher saying that he was choosing a new lead mare tomorrow and that likely meant the herd would be moving again. If that was the case, Helios would need all the rest he could get.

I saw this reference and just knew I had to use it for Helios! I wasn’t sure what to do for the background, but I had a firefly field event and decided to just mess around. Looking at some firefly images, I kinda tried to capture the colours of the night but kept it simple. Its a much more whimsical background than I usually do, but I’m happy with it. I mean, there’s no such thing as too many fireflies, right? XD
