Description So this is one of my long awaited contest-prizes. This one is ~vandonovan 's prize - a picture of his unicorn character, Shadow.

So, the original prize was one character with little or no background, but I mean come on - the guy waited over fourteen months without complaint! This thing took longer to deliver than a freakin human baby.

Anyways, there are alot of aspects of this that could be better. The background is not very defined (especially that stupid grass), the perspective is wacked (I think Cy'ra should probably be smaller), and the characters don't seem to fit with the background's lighting very well (cloudy day lighting is soooo hard). Overall, though, I think I'm okay with this. It's not my best ever, but I love the colors, and it was good practice.

Nothing signifigant here. Just a chance meeting on a stormy autumn day.

love the painterly feel; even though the more "painted" background might distract from the unicorns, at the same time, it draws more attention to them, because they're sharper and more defined, while the background is more blurry.
and i love the colors. autumn is my favorite season :] i love how a grey sky against all those autumn colors looks.

B-e-a-utiful! I actually love "messy" background like this.
It pulls your eye toward the characters more, since they're
the actual subject. You know, this actually feels like a
postcard. I want to turn it over and read the inscription:
"Greetings from Where You Want to Be." XD

Oh dear. This... this is absolutely wonderful! Quite possibly among the very greatest pieces in your gallery. Seriously. I can't get over the incredible detail and realism in the unicorns, and the background is to dieeeeee for. This is beyond the scale of what my comments can describe. Do not DARE put yourself down on a piece like this. It's worth waiting eons for. x3

The colours are AMAZING. I like how the fallen trunk/branch is almost like an extension of Shadow's horn. That was probably unintentional, but it looks good! And I looove the way you do hair... it's so beautiful. Awesome job Kate, one of my faves from you!

Foodstores and goodwill are good. Walk in the woods not so much. It's just not as magical as when I first walked in there. It felt untouched, but really it's been soiled by hooomans. D:

I did see mushrooms there in the summer, though.

I love the vibrancy of the autumnal trees compared to the mountains and storm. The style you've drawn them in is really fitting with the bg, too, so I wouldn't worry too much about blurriness. You always use such interesting poses - the darker's pose, for example, is a classic pose of a medieval unicorn, yet you've twisted it into the picture well. , as always!

Huh, I didn't know that. His pose was just something I'd made for his icon, and then integrated into the picture.

you critizise your own work too much, this is really really beautiful! and personally, I think it works really well with the slightly blurry background, it puts the characters more into perspective, and creates a softer and more peaceful feel to the entire piece. very good job ^w^

I think this is actually quite beautiful!

Sure perspective is just a tad off, but I think the lighting is fine and as for the sketchy background I think it adds to the piece beautifully. The fact that Cy'ra and Shadow are defined and the background blurs brings your full attention to the two unicorns, almost as if the world faded away when they first made eye contact. At the same time the background gives setting, color, and motion to the piece.
