The Owl House is one of the most popular cartoons to come out in the 2020s. Animation fans all over the world have praised this show to no end ever since it started back in January of 2020. I remember actually sitting down and watching the very first episode of the series back on January 10th, four years ago (holy shit...). Anyways, just like with Amphibia, I also gave this show a rewatch to reevaluate my opinions on the show, especially since I didn't make visual scorecards for S2 and S3. And I really enjoyed The Owl House as much as I enjoyed Amphibia, even if I still slightly prefer the latter.

Season one is a good season, but it has some flaws holding it back. The setting of the Boiling Isles and the way the characters interact with it is pretty cool. Luz is a great protagonist that I can relate to a whole lot. She likes a lot of weird things but it doesn't actually define who she is as a person. Her interactions with Eda, King, Willow, Gus, and especially Amity, are great ways to keep her character interesting. King is pretty entertaining in this season and has a lot of goofy moments, which I find charming. Eda is a really sassy, but fun character to watch, and every time she makes a one-liner, it's iconic. Gus and Willow unfortunately don't get too much development outside of Gus trying to prove his human fan club is legit, and Willow amending her problems with Amity, but then again, I sort of enjoy the both of them, even if they are the least interesting characters in this first season. But far and away the most interesting character in the bunch is Amity. A pretty rude and sadistic bully who later turns out to be good at heart and learns to work with Luz, Gus and Willow later on. For the most part, season one kept me entertained, with the episodes focused on the characters being the best part about the season. Sadly, this makes the episodes that are of mostly filler sort of just decent, or sometimes, downright bad. It's sort of like Amphibia season one, but to a slightly worse extent. I especially hate Once Upon a Swap, where characters act incredibly stupid and out-of-character just for them to learn the episode's moral, or characters just straight up missing details that are right in there faces. However, season one still has some awesome episodes, such as The Intruder, Covention, and especially Enchanting Grom Fright, one of the best episodes of the series. Overall, season one is a pretty good season, even if it has a few issues that hinder the final product. It was a decent way for the series to start going in a more story-focused and episodic structure.

And that they did. Season two is a vast improvement over season one. The characters go through more development, Emperor Belos is a much more interesting character this time around, the animation was given a bigger budget, and it feels less filler-y than season one. We get more insight of King and what his past was like and where he comes from, and it is heartbreaking when he actually figures everything out. It's really cool to learn that he was the son of the titan, the literal skeleton of the Boiling Isles. Eda manages to control her curse and to live with it, and Luz's mistakes bite her in the behind and contribute to what would be the basis of the next season. Hunter is by far the most interesting episode of this season, as he's introduced as the Golden Guard of the Emperor's Coven and we see how he comes to realize his life wasn't as he expected it was, leading to Hollow Mind, the best episode of the season. It gave me a lot of dread and sadness for him and it is the darkest episode of the show by far. There aren't any episodes from season two that I dislike at all, which goes to show how solid the series was at this point. They even made an Hooty-centric episode work somehow, which develops all of our main characters really well, considering the time-slot of the episodes. Overall, season two was certainly splendid and I enjoyed it quite a lot. A much more consistent effort and direction for the show heading forward...

...which might have been shown more if Disney had not shortened the third and final season for "not fitting the Disney brand" (FUCK YOU, DISNEY!). Instead of a full season, we got three specials, significantly hindering the runtime of the final season. However, the first special was a really solid outing, Thanks to Them. It's my second favorite episode of the series and it's pretty airtight. It has some of the best scenes of the show, a really awesome battle between the Hexside Squad and Belos, and a good progression of the story. It also has the best emotional and character-driven parts of the show too. A solid first entry... only to be followed by a slightly disappointing second entry, For The Future. While the first part is pretty solid and entertaining, it is dragged down by the second half when we get to New Hexside, ran by Boscha and Kikimora... two characters that should've absolutely not had any amount of focus whatsoever. When the show has a limited amount of screentime, we don't have time to focus on anyone else. There were a million other interesting stories and plot threads they could have focused on, but we have to spend time on Boscha's cliched and downright terrible motivation of trying to get Amity to be her friend again and Kikimora just wanting to rule over everyone; the latter's focus being even more pathetic, since it was her motive from the start. There are some really good parts here and there in the second half, but the New Hexside crap really drag down the special for me, which sucks. At least Willow was given some much needed development. Thankfully, Watching and Dreaming stuck the landing and gave the series a good ending. They did a good job of selling The Collector and his story, concluding Luz's character arc, an awesome final battle with the main trio against Belos, and ending things off with a great epilogue. A great final part to a surprisingly tremendous final season, which I don't really consider a season at all and more like a movie, but still counts as a season regardless. Considering that the show was given one of the shittiest hands in cartoon history, it surprisingly managed to conclude the series on a really high note without anything feeling out of place, and I applaud The Owl House crew for pulling through and giving the series the ending it deserved.

The Owl House is a really great (82.9%) show. While I prefer Amphibia subjectively, there are a few things that The Owl House does better than Amphibia that give it a .2% higher rating (such as a better third season). It has an interesting world, fun and likeable characters, a pretty good premise, fantastic animation, especially when it gets smooth, and some of my favorite moments in animation history. Both shows are some of my favorites of all time and I will miss this era of Disney Television Animation as a whole, so I am glad this show had a good finale to end it off.
