Very cool sketch card. I can't believe how fast you painted it for the detail provided!

Glad you liked it. Most of the detail is suggested by using a larger brush with 2 or more colors and rolling or angling the brush; started with the shadow color and established most of the head and shaded areas very quickly. Finished with a # 4 or 6 pointed round.
Watercolor has many possibilities from tight realism too loose stylized work, such as this.

Thank you for the explanation. I can definitely see some of the technique you described, but it is still just so impressive to me that you were able to form and complete the piece so quickly. I am so slow that I can take 20 minutes just picking and mixing up some colours Plus that technique you used is far trickier to pull off than you made it sound! Things can become so muddy, or bleed, or run the wrong way, or mix together etc when doing this stuff. However, you have succeed in keeping your colours well defined (or beautifully graduated in the background tones), and your finer foreground lines well placed and crisp.

You have to work slower until you can think 3 steps ahead. The paper is very absorbent in this case. Colors won't move unless very wet. Was working on the dry side after the initial washes as well. Been at this professionally more than 25 years [that helps too.]

Instantly saw who this was without really seeing the title. Watch this show as a kid.....can't remember if it was an 80s or 90s show tho......

Reminds me actually that I have a 2.5x3 inch sketch book. Must take that with me when out and about for quick studies......

It's actually harder to draw on a smaller surface I find as you are restricted to space. It makes you more precise I find.......so hats off for painting it, I couldn't imagine trying it.....

I like to adjust to many scales and media choices; it makes one sharper and focused on what's happening with the materials at all times...
