I wonder if the fire was at all related to his being in the "hospital"...
I am continually amazed at dcrisisbeta's ability to have these long plot lines and seemingly minor details that are actually consistent with details much later on. The idea of him being "clean" (assuming the rehab theory is correct) before something or another happens was a loooong time ago. Its the little things like that that make me like this series so much.

Just got better; and out of "....the hospital..."
Place your bets folks: Mental Institution and finally got the right treatment/medication; or Rehab Center and just got clean?

My money's definitely on "sick being a euphemism for drug addiction/rehab center. Which, if I'm right, I totally called. Think about it - if he was legitimately naturally ill, wouldn't they find a way to have the family visit or communicate with him before now?

Drug addiction is absolutely the most plausible. However, for arguments sake, I would like to point out that given how young Sam and Max are; it's unlikely they would have been brought to a mental institution if he'd been receiving psychological help.
But of course the most telling sign is how the mother reacted. Definitely seemed more of a 'it was his fault' sort of reaction, followed by joy when learning he was better. So most likely drug use, or perhaps an addiction center for gambling or alcohol use

Knowing you, he wasn't the stranger danger, he was mistaken for the stranger danger several times but he wasn't. Poor Erin, losing his sister must have destroyed him.
I think both mom and Sam are being strong at all times and all, but I don't think they healed correctly, which makes them strong for now... but they will break in a moment or another.
