Anything for You, Master… A sharp rapping at her door drove Miss Ling from her weary slumber. She only been asleep for ninety minutes when she heard a fist pounding at the entrance to her servants quarters. She rose from her bed, gathering around herself her favorite housecoat, as she nominally didn't wear much to bed, save a small chemise and a pair of boy shorts. She opened the door ever so slightly, yawning as she did so, to see her master, Gregory, pale faced and frightened, on the other side of the threshold.

"Master Gregory? Why do you come here at this hour?"

"Please, please hurry! We need to move, NOW!"

"Master Gregory… ?"

"No time! HURRY!"

Master Gregory grabbed at Ling's wrist and hurried from the servants quarters into the grand hall, and from there, left off at a branch that led towards to the nearly completed side of the mansion. Here and there, signs of recent construction showed starkly against the elegant wall paintings and wood grain flooring. It was at this point that Master Gregory stopped, Ling following hopelessly behind, at the end of a long hallway with a single, unoccupied and unfurnished bedroom. He proceeded to bring something from his night robe.

"Here," said Master Gregory, handing Ling a long dagger with a trigger attached to it, "take this. Your uniform is on the lounger there. If anything should happen to me, use the blade against anyone who comes near, and if necess-"

There was a loud crash, several rough voices bellowing insults and abuse, and the stillness of one in the morning was interrupted by the sound of invaders.

Master Gregory swallowed hard then said, "If necessary, use the blade on yourself. They can know NOTHING!"

Before Ling could utter a protest, Master Gregory had hastened down the corridor, seeking escape or confrontation, Ling did not know. There were precious few moments left. Her Master's words hung in the air.

"If anything should happen to me, use the blade against anyone who comes near."
"If necessary, use the blade on yourself."
"They can know NOTHING!"

Ling dressed herself back into her uniform, then knelt down on the hard wood floor, with the dagger laying at her knees. She could hear the intruders stomping around the mansion, turning over the house, looking for something. Occasionally she could hear excited shouts and what sounded like a foot chase. It was several minutes before the last of these finally ended, punctuated by loud and angry shouting, and finally, gunshots.

She wept, knowing her Master was now dead, and contemplating the horrible choice she was now in possession of. Footsteps approached from the end of the grand hallway. They were coming. She looked at the dagger; the dagger looked back. At last, she came to a decision.
"Anything for you, Master..."

She raised the dagger.
