Spruce Tree House, Mesa Verde National Park. I painted this small watercolor as a Christmas gift in 2018. Winter is a quiet time at Mesa Verde, with the exception of the popular Luminaria Night. This is the view of Spruce Tree House from across the canyon, where the park headquarters and museum are. I was fortunate to get to work inside the site for several seasons, making detailed maps and notes of the architecture. Although there have been a number of stabilization projects to shore up the walls since 1908, roughly 90% of the site is the original fabric: stones, mortar, wooden beams, and plaster. Sometimes you can find 800-year-old fingerprints in the plaster.
