Description So, as a side project, influenced by me wanting to read a lot more lately, I've been wanting to draw famous (or semi-famous) characters that appear in fantasy or fantasy-adjacent novels/stories, etc. The catch is that if the character has appeared in works that have been adapted into other media (games, film, etc) I'll take no influence from those depictions, but rather straight from the book's pages, as close as I can possibly get them. Obviously some artistic liberties will be taken if said characters' descriptions are more ambiguous, hard to decipher or if details aren't apparent. This project will likely take some time, as though I do not plan on reading every single book associated with the characters, finding their descriptions and designing them in my free time will be fairly intensive.
-------------------------------------
 Severian:

Severian is the main character from Gene Wolfe's genre-bending Book of the New Sun tetralogy. Donning a cloak and mask made of a material so black that it appears flat and graphic, Severian was born into the Torturer's Guild, an ancient guild that carries out torture and execution for the Autarch. The Autarch is the supreme ruler of Urth, a world in which the sun is rapidly burning out, threatening to end all life. The story uses elements of meta-fiction, as it's told in first person as Severian (who claims to have a perfect memory) recollects his life story- this story being translated by Wolfe from a language that has yet to be developed. Due to these layers of possible deception, the reader's trust in Severian as he narrates the story is consistently compromised.

Being part of the "Dying Earth" sub-genre pioneered by author Jack Vance, The Book of the New Sun brilliantly melds science fiction and fantasy, and contains some of the most inventive prose in a work of fiction I've ever read. Two books into the series and I'm already hooked.

Have you read the mythgarthr books from gene wolfe? Great books too! I just like the style of writing gene wolfe has. You can read them many times and always find something new.

I kinda like how his home or whatever that is in the background has a tower that looks like a old school rocket.

Reading that as a kid inspired me greatly. And finding it as an ancient paperback in the back of a used book shop is a treasured memory. It was one of the first books I read in English. It's welcome to be reminded of it.

Cool design on the character, and niec idea with portraying characters from different books. I'd imagine that a member of the Torturer's Guild have a belt with various torture implements, but I sure like the cloak and mask (helps add in a sense of mystery to the character, and a mask is greeat in making someone more intimidating).
Jack Vance has been a pretty big influence for D&D - most notably its magic system.

Is the World ''Urth'' related to that of fellow artist Blazbaros? It certainly carries the sae name. Btw I really like his design.

Never heard of Gene Wolfe or his books. Sounds like another genre I have to add to my bucket list. Thanks for clearing things up.

HOLY CRAP!  Your drawing and summary of the book has me interested now!

I'm gonna have to look for these books!...And when I do, I'll imagine Severian the way you drew him, heh heh.

A criminally underappreciated series. Also, I really dig your interpretation of the Fuligin mantle, especially the internal stitching.

I loved those books, you could never guess what was going to happen next. I particularly liked the duel with giant poisonous razor flowers.

Loving them so far!

Oh yeah, that flower duel is my favorite passage in the first book; it's so amazingly written.

you have my interest. would the four books in the series be available in store still? it reminds me of another sci-fantasy novel I read. I only read the one book, but always wanted to revisit that world. I think this series sounds similar enough that I could lose myself in them.

I think they're still in print, yeah! The most recent editions of them combine 2 of the stories into a single volume; I bought the first volume online, found the second volume at a Barnes and Noble store.

They can be quite obtuse and hard to decipher at times, but I absolutely love them.

I'll have to look for them at books-a-million then. that's the closest book store to me. I picked up the missing volumes from long and on going Legend of Drizzt series. so I'm sure if I look hard enough ...

Gene Wolfe is easily my favourite author, and this is one of the best depictions of Severian I’ve seen. Great work man!

Thanks so much!

I'm still in the process of writing it- writing has never been my strongsuit, but I've been slowly chipping away at it with the help of a friend.

Writing is tough. I find the rewrites to be especially painful. I still have to finish my own comic. I've got like three unfinished plots I want to use, and I think I'll focus on inking. Maybe I'll get someone to color latter?
