demiveemon — Siesta Doodles - How do you draw an ancient frog?

Description Rocky the Frog has always been a part of my Siesta pictures with only few exceptions. Yesterday's doodle with the mammoths was one of those exceptions, but I sure missed him.

Tonight I've been doodling frogs, trying to come up with a concept for his ancestor. But, how do you make a frog look like his living in the ice age?

Thanks for the tip, dear. It's funny how animals back then were either tiiiiiny or really huge. I've been looking up the ancestors of modern tigers (hoping to find a larger sabertoothed version or something like that, but it seems that the reality was the opposite). I'm pondering if I should just go with a Smilodon (the most famous species of saber toothed tigers), ignoring the fact that they were endemic to America and that the entire branch of sabertooths went extinct (meaning they're not truly linked to tigers or other modern big cats).
I need Al's ancestor to be larger than himself, for the idea to work, that I have. But I hate twisting facts for the sake of that. So I'm a bit uncertain on that point. xD;

Nice to see you making some fresh Siesta Universe drawings, even if only doodles. Last time I checked you were still pretty much occupied with making plushies.

Haha! I still have plenty of plushing to do, but until my fingers are good again I'm taking a break and doodle meanwhile instead. :3
Working on a more elaborate doodle and if possible I'll upload it later tonight, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish it in time. Otherwise I'll have to wait for a couple of days due to lack of internet and many hours on the road. :3

Yep, I just read your journal. I hope your fingers are getting better now. Any special reason for drawing mammoths and "ancient" frogs?

Thanks. I'm hoping so too, but the skin refuses to turn normal as of yet. Atleast it's not itchy and I havn't payed much thought to it lately. Have been too busy babysitting. xD

Hm, it might have been somewhat random that my first doodle turned out to be mammoths, or I was having a conversation with someone and figured, that I ought to familiarise myself with Henry in cartoony form. I've had an idea for a long time to show some of the ancestors of the jungle animals in a short comic strip, if I ever get around to drawing it. So now I'm sniffing around a bit. xD

Not sure if I'll have a use for any of the ancient frogs at the end of the day, but they sure were fun to doodle.

Ha ha fun to doodle - that's what counts most. So what ancient animals do you plan to draw beside mommoths? Heh I wonder how would the ancient pangolin look like...

demiveemon In reply to solarissss [2012-08-19 15:48:39 +0000 UTC]

Ancient Al and Pete for sure. Hm, I doubt that pangolins looked very different during the ice age. Maybe they were another size, but I'm suspecting that their design hasn't changed much over the millenias.

Come to think of it, you might be right.
I suppose crocodiles haven't changed much either.

All your pics and sketches are so cute and funny like in real cartoons! I love that style! Nice job with the tiger and mammoths doodles too. Which animals do you plan to sketch next?

I don't know which animal will be next. I generally try to plan ahead as little as possible. :3

Haha funny thing, I've just been listening to a song called "Mosquito song" (by Queens of the Stone Age). I don't know what music do you like, but you can listen it here if interested: [link]

I listen to different kinds of music, some oldies but mostly more rescent songs.
This one was a little too longish for my taste, otherwise not bad. :3

What an idea! But I'm afraid I can't help you there. Why do you need ancient frogs anyway? You got bored drawing normal ones?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

demiveemon In reply to auxy9 [2012-07-25 14:44:39 +0000 UTC]

Haha! No, I havn't grown tired of my normal Siesta figures. But if I am to draw something more proper than a small sketch of Henry, it would be good to know what some of the other major animal's ancestors could look like so that I can add some more familiar faces/concepts. :3

Luckily for you there's no deadline or something. But maybe it wouldn't be bad to sketch the scene, not to forget it. I imagine it's gonna be quite a mixture of different kinds of characters. And speaking of Ice age, yesterday I watched the new Ice Age movie trailer and it looked promising. I really must watch it!

I hope it is as good as the trailer promises. xD Often they grab the best scenes for the trailer.

I should atleast make a list of all the stuff. xD

I think jus a frod with a horn would loke more ancienty. Oh and huge, it had to be like 3x the size of a normal frog. LOL

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

demiveemon In reply to BloodWolf19 [2012-07-25 14:41:38 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Yeah, huge occured to me as well. I tried drawing a more heavy, toad like version, but although I had a pretty good idea in my head of what it should look like, I couldn't getit on to the paper. XD My ideas are far too vague for that.

BloodWolf19 In reply to demiveemon [2012-07-25 14:50:40 +0000 UTC]

Oddly though the style of the first and last ones reminds me of frogs out of afrog comic book thing we use to have laying around the house. The universe only knows what's become of it now.

demiveemon In reply to BloodWolf19 [2012-07-25 15:41:00 +0000 UTC]

Hm, doesn't ring a bell. But I would be surpriced if there hasn't been similar ways of drawing cartoony frogs before, since it's a very simple design.
You don't happen to remember the full titel or an author's/illustrator's name? I would love to see those frogs. ^^

Honestly i have no idea. i've been loking and i can't find it. If i run across it again i'll let you know for sure. It was like a comic book and a joke book mixed into one. it was one of those short and long books, not like a normal comic, and the book was likely older then i am. (i'm 20, so yeh). So trying to find it again, anywhere, wont be easy.
