Description "In a thousand years Gandahar was distroyed. A thousand years ago Gandahar will be saved. And what can't be avoided, will be."

This pic is a tribute to a forgotten animation that was released from France in 1988 (in colaberation with Korean animators). "Gandahar" (AKA "Light Years" in the US) was an animation that would address the issues of prejudice, ignorance, and the dangers inherent in both, as well as the clash of a natural environment with encroaching technology. This fan art is in fact a recreation of the very first scene of the movie, which remains this one's favorite becuase of the harmony and tranquility expressed in it.

When brought to the US for production, it was considered a groundbreaking animation, and featured the voices of Hollywood greats such as Glenn Close, Bridget Fonda, Christopher Plummer and even comedians Penn and Teller. It was thought that "Gandahar" would join the ranks of it's predecessor "Fantastic Planet" and be remembered as a legendary film. This was not to be. At nearly the same time "Gandahar" was released in the US, under the title "Light Years", another animation was released that not only changed the standards for animation for time, but SET the standards for nearly all the animations of today: the legendary Japanese anime "Akira". With "Akira" in theaters, "Gandahar" was virtually forgotten.

Although hard to find, "Gandahar" can be seen on YouTube, and this one highly recommends this film to anyone who loves animation. The nudity throughout the film, is actually tasteful and reflective of a utopia that is "a civilazation that prefers the organic" which is the focus of the film. This one understands that a DVD will soon be released of "Gandahar" in the UK, in it's original, unedited format.

You can see the US version here:

And read more on the background of the movie here:

It is a truly unique story and animation.

This one closes this lengthy comment with a wise quote from the film's director Isaac Asimov:
"We speak of Time and Mind, which do not easily yeild into categories. We separate past and future and find that Time is an amalgam of both. We separate good and evil and find that Mind is an amalgam of both. To understand, we must grasp the whole." -- Isaac Asimov

Edit: As of 2008 both "Gandahar" and the US release "Light Years" have been made available on DVD.

Nice work on capturing the world of Airelle by your style, and must agree with you about this film (just saw it yesterday) as well

My pleasure.
Also liked her beauty as well.
Have you seen Fantastic Planet? It was also done by Laloux, too

That movie was something....
I loved Les Maîtres du Temps spécialy even more, myself (The Time Masters) - the art of Moebius was for it, I guess
(It is the second movie of Laloux, between Planet and Gandahar)

The Fantastic Planet was a little hard for me to digest, but then it is a style that I was not familiar with up until recently in terms of it's artwork, animation style and overall themes. I guess I need to break out of my comfort zones a little more in that sense. And Gandahar helped me do that!

So Avatar is Gandahar, Last of the Mohicans, Ferngully, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Heavy Metal, Star Wars, Star Trek 6, Fantastic Planet, Willow and Castle in The Sky (Laputa) combined in a cocktail isn't that right?

Light Years has been one of my favorite animated movies since i was 11 for 18 years and showed me animation can be for adults too but i did had earlier experiences with adult animation such as Warriors of the Wind (the 1985 butchered Nausicaa), Transformers The Movie, Fire and Ice, Wizards and Starchaser Legend of Orin as a kid then i watched this on video and bought myself a copy of it, i even watched Heavy Metal, Vampire Hunter D, Rock and Rule and American Pop.

Did the movie Avatar reminded you of this movie? James Cameron is a fan of animation including Sci-fi/fantasy movies/novels, anime and Rene Laloux's animated movies as i'm sure this is one of his favorites. There are big similarities abound.

I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar had some influence from the Light Years animation, as there seems to be a theme of blue skin with both! So many of your favorite 80's adult styled animations are now all over Youtube and actually it is kind of nice as they are hard to get a hold of in their original formats.

Hehe I'm not that good at drawing, I'd get the anatomy all messed up.
And yeah, I searched for gandahar on Deviantart and I was surprised to see that the only fanpicture of the movie was the one you had drawn.
And hey, is it just me or is airelle pretty hot? ^^
Anyways, kudos to Gandahar for it's originality. I don't know how many times I've seen it. I recall watching it over and over again as a kid. The first time I saw it I must have been like 2 years old or something. I tell you, I love the beautiful scenery, it's wonderful soundtrack, all of the exciting creatures. Hey ain't those 3 eyed little squeaky animals so cute? I want to have one of those as a pet.
Hey maybe I should draw some of those little critters, eh?

Demosthenes-101 In reply to Wolfy-Snackrib [2008-01-26 12:58:01 +0000 UTC]

Airelle was supposed to be hot because she was the heroine! But then the majority of the woman and men in the movie were made to be attractive. Mmmm.....those tri-eyed things actually were pretty annoying to me....but yeah they were cute. Maybe in a future pic they'll get drawn. The deformed are the ones that I found most facinating. Hideous being with wisdon and intellegence that show that looks really ARN'T everything. And I do think that was the point of the deformed being heros in the story.

Im glad you even know it exists! Half the people I talk too know the film "Fantastic Planet" but if I bring up "Ghandahar" (or "Light Years") and they look at me like I am weird or something. I guess some films need time to know their greatness.
