True story: the week after the infamous Kirk-Uhura smooch, Gene Rodenberry pulled Nichelle Nichols aside during the filming of an episode and showed her a letter that had arrived from a preacher in the southern United States. The letter declared "I do not approve of a mixing of the races, but when a man gets his hands on a woman who looks like that he does what comes natural!"

Another true story: even though Uhura caused her to be typecasted, Nichelle Nichols still says she is forever thankful for the role-becuase being Lt. Uhura allowed her to meet with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. mere weeks before he was assasinated, and that it is a moment that will live forever in her memory.

My family actually got to meet Nichelle Nichols.
We met her at Comic-Con 2009. We have her signed picture hanging on our wall.
She also informed us of The Cabonauts, though, sadly I forgot about that until I saw this picture.
