I know! The sky can really look wild at times. I always know when we're having a killer sunset because the interior light in the house turns pink!!! You just can't miss it.

Thank you very much, Kim. Your sunsets are amazing, too. Every night, the sunset is completely different from the night before. Tonight, we had those high, thin clouds covering the sun again and contrails. It made a very beautiful, muted sunset.

We dont always get ones with lots of color here in Wyoming. Mostly ours are golden except right as the sun just barely begins to set and sometimes then it will be pink, light pink, but not for much time and only if there are clouds. I have heard that the colors of the sunset -- the multi colored, brillent ones, ore the result of pollution in the air; that it gives the light rays something to refract off of and split and change color. I dont recall where I heard that or how true it is. I do miss skies painted purple and orange and viloet and shocking pink all at once though!

That's true about pollution--it does make for a more colorful sunset. But clouds, fog, ice crystals, and other non-polluting particulates contribute to color in a BIG way. I've seen cloud rainbows form when the clouds are made up of ice crystals. That's such an amazing sight! And sundogs are the result of ice crystals, too.

aha ok. that all does make sence. and why we see more color sometimes when its cloudy or snowy. We have so much wind here though that it tends to just blow everything away. And I do mean everything, including the clouds haha. We have had 65+ mph winds the last few days. The whole house shakes when it beats against it. When it gets that bad I dont sleep well at night if its pounding the side of the house our bedroom is on. I had to restult to drinking a bit last night to actually get to where I could block it out and just doze off. Ugh.

OMG, that's gale-force wind! Yikes, I couldn't sleep with that much racket either! I was once on a 50-passenger fishing boat out on the "high seas" during a gale. (What possessed us to go out like that?) Anyway, the bow of the boat took on lots of water as it cut into the waves. When we were down in the trough, you could look up about 30 feet over your head and see water. VERY scary. But we made it to our destination (an island retreat) and were OK. The captain told us the winds were gale-force. I don't know why he went out like that, but maybe the wind wasn't as strong when we left shore.

It's a wonder I'm still here!

wow what a story! That would be absolutely terrifying. Houses here are built to typically hold up fine in that type of wind as we do get it alot like that in the winter. Keeps you homebound, no one wants to go out in it when its like that. not fun at all.

desmo100 In reply to MooseCall [2006-01-13 18:48:13 +0000 UTC]

Being house-bound is SO not fun. I know how it feels. When we had back to back blizzards some years ago, it was horrible. You'd go outside and there were tunnels everwhere, sidewalks banked by 3 feet of snow. Awful. I really got sick of snow that year.

I used to do daredevil things when I was young--would do just about anything on a dare, and thank God didn't get into real trouble. My dad did not believe in coddling kids, either. I was an only child, but I did things adults do all the time. We were natural risk-takers, but they were calculated risks. We would go out deep sea fishing all the time; got caught up in bad weather, and the row boat took on water, and the engine wouldn't start. Those things are part of my past, and I'm so glad I have those interesting memories! Now that I'm older, I'm not likely to do very much on a dare. So I just think about them!

You lived well and had adventure. Now its time to sit back and enjoy thigns Nothing wrong with that. We woke up to snow this morning and its supposed to storm again tomorrow. At least the winds have died down considerably though. Whew!

Today and tomorrow, we have high wind warnings! We went from warm, quiet sunny weather, to rainy, stormy, cold weather--overnight!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MooseCall In reply to desmo100 [2006-01-17 01:21:58 +0000 UTC]

I sure know that feeling. My word the winds here died down and Sunday day was GEORGOUS. Sunny, little to no wind, warm (for winter) all the snow melted...out of nowhere a storm must have blown in because we awoke this morning to 6 inches on the ground and more coming down! As the day rolled on, the sun came out despite it snowing so the overall accumulation remained the same despite it coming down all afternoon. Its supposed to be COOOLD tomorrow.

Thanks for capturing this beautiful sunset. Sometimes I think nature can't possibly make another skyscape more beautiful than the one today, but then there it is the next day - the most perfect sky ever! I never tire of sunsets and sunrises.

Thank you. I shot it from the second story window to the back yard. Sometimes I can get a really good view of the sky, even tho the tree is definitely in the way a little.

You're very welcome, you deserve it ^_^ I don't think the tree's really in the way though, I love the lacy effect that you see with the light coming from behind, and since it's so dark, it brings the colors out a little more too.

desmo100 In reply to Dragonfyre51 [2006-01-12 02:36:26 +0000 UTC]

I guess that old tree adds some interest. It's just that sometimes the sky is so complex and layered, the tree does obscure the full view. That's when I go up the street to a better viewing area!
