Description This forlorn tree against the darkened sky made me think of Truman Capote's phrase, "a leafless, birdless coming of a winter morning," as described in "A Christmas Memory."

Thank you very much, Anj. Sometimes that tree makes me mad because it obscures the sunset, but sometimes it looks wonderful! This was one of those times, and I love that old thing--even though I cuss it out.

Hi, Jean,

I know what you mean - sometimes things in life we love can be a pain. *smiles* But if it weren't for the frustration at times I don't think we'd appreciate the beauty when we see it... as you so obviously did!

Anj

Thank you so much. I like that tree when it looks spooky like that...it's a great setting for a sunset, but there are times I wish I had a clear view of the sky.

Thank you very much, Sailor. I pushed the saturation a bit with this one. Maybe I should have left it alone, because winter sunsets tend to be "cooler" in color...

SailorSS420 In reply to desmo100 [2006-12-02 23:12:18 +0000 UTC]

No, no. You did just right. It's got that decayed yellow look that I see every night up here as the sun slides over the western horizon. Gives me the shivers.....

desmo100 In reply to SailorSS420 [2006-12-02 23:41:12 +0000 UTC]

That's good to know (about the colors), but I sure don't want to make you shiver any more than you have to! I know it must be darned cold up there...it is here, too. Yesterday, our temps were mid-70s; today, 45 was as high as it got. What crazy weather, eh?

SailorSS420 In reply to desmo100 [2006-12-03 01:35:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Crazy weather. It was warm all last month, now it's starting to get colder, but still not normal for what we usually have this time of year. I guess I shiver from memories...... the nights are to long, with nothing to do. I can't asleep 12 hours, unless I stay up for 48 before hand and I run into the problem, what to do to stay awake.. lol.

When the clock changes from daylight savings to standard, my whole sleep routine gets really messed up. I tend to oversleep quite a lot; in summer, I sleep very little!

It has a bleak quality about it, but also a sort of spooky quality too. The tree is taking on an ominous look.

Thanks, Sophie. You are the only one to mention this, and I'm glad you did. It's the very first thing I noticed about the picture, that it was too warm for that big old skeletal tree! I was wondering whether to tone the sky down a bit, but decided to let it be. Some of the other shots that didn't show the sun (clouds were covering) were far more spooky than this one. You are so right about the dichotomy. Usually, I don't like to have that in a picture---I just want to tell a story but not have too much irony. This was definitely a bit of irony!

Thank you, Lauren. It's a bit spooky, I agree. Yet that old tree is such a wonderful thing to have! The neighbors own it, but it branches out into our yard, so it's partly ours, I guess.

That's okay until you have to rake leaves.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

desmo100 In reply to laurengary [2006-11-30 02:19:30 +0000 UTC]

Leaves are just a part of it. That darned thing drops some major limbs and branches after heavy storms. We had so much debris in our back yard after one storm that I made a pile out on the street to be collected--the pile was larger than our car. And that was after I broke them up into smaller pieces!

And did I mention the walnuts? They are covered with a thick green husk about the size of a tennis ball. Tons of those things fall into our yard, too. The green stuff turns into any icky black mess that you can slip on if you take a wrong step. They have to be raked constantly during late summer, so it's kind of backbreaking work keeping up with that.

The squirrels love the tree, though. And I like it too, because after the horrible beating its taken during the storms, it's still there! Gotta admire its sheer audacity to remain standing.

I know all about those darn walnuts. A couple of summers ago some trees sprouted around our old house. Well, lo & behold, they turned out to walnuts. Which would have been okat except the squirrels got into our attic with their now plentiful food supply & ruined a bunche of Christmas decorations plus books & some other things. When we cleaned out the attic we had to throw boxes of stuff away because there was no saving them.....and I had a gorgeous Angel Tree Topper too.

squirrels in the attic are a bane. We had them one year, but I managed to get rid of them through constant monitoring. And what a mess they made!

Thank you so much for the lovely compliment! I'm glad you like this one. The tree behind our house is a curse and a blessing--it blocks a lot of the sky, so it's harder to get a good sunset pic, but on the other hand, it's an interesting tree. It's almost haunted!

Thank you, too, for the . I appreciate it!

I'm glad you like it. I think bare trees are beautiful in their own way. Some of the ones around here are gnarled and twisted, as if they didn't care which way they grew. But they look starkly beautiful against the sky!
