Description A small frog suns himself in a nearby pond.

Note: Frogs (and all other amphibians) are in trouble! Here's an excerpt from an article in eNature:

"It's been more than a decade since herpetologists in the United States, Australia, and Central America first noted the localized extinction of frog, toad, and salamander species and an abnormally high level of genetic deformities in certain amphibian groups. Since then causes have been sought, conferences held, and conclusions proposed, but the situation seems only to be worsening. In fact, amphibian extinction and rapid population declines have been observed even in relatively pristine wilderness areas like Yosemite National Park, where seven frog species are in steep decline and three have disappeared completely."

You got some tame frogs there. I can't get near one up here.

These guys are also very shy, but if I stand around long enough, the bolder ones will come up to the surface and sit quietly. When I first approach the pond, most of them jump in with a loud chirping noise and splash. I think they like to take in the sun, so if they see I'm not a threat, they are OK with it. They do watch me, though...

There you go, you have to have the patience to sit and wait.

That's the secret eh? I'll have to plan my hikes so that I end up at a pond, 'cause I'm pretty tired by then. Trouble might be, it I sit to long, I'll stiffen up and not be able to walk back out. Then I'd be one for the bears..... lol.

Thank you, Lori. I think they're cute little buggers. I'm glad there are still places around here that have frogs and other wildlife. Our area is full of naturalists and people interested in land preservation and ecology. Virginia offers all kinds of tax advantages to those who turn their land into wildlife refuges.

Welcome Jean We get some dear and have some ground moles that are destroying our lawn and garden We need to get rid of them but I don't want to kill them But you can't walk on our grass without feeling their burrows

Moles are awful! My dad had lots of them in his lawn....I think he had to put some poison in to stop them. I don't like killing them, either. Also, I wonder if they die a horrible death! I'll bet they don't just lie down and go to sleep. Thinking about that makes me very upset, too.

True, I would hate to think we caused them to suffer, even though they're not as respectful to us Little devils
