Description Even though I might be a little late, yet I decided to draw something for the Deviantart original character challenge . Just wanted to participate in the challenge.

My character’s name is Yardan - he is a Roman galli and born prince of Anatolia. I drew him in the appearance of god Attis, the ancient Phrygian god of vegetation. Seeing that most characters are cis males or female I wanted to make a tribute to non-binary gender people, and in ancient times they were considered hermaphrodites and androgynous.

I used soft pastel colors like pink, gold and white and choose the green for background to display the peacefulness of nature, as the resurrected sun-god Attis is also the god of spring and fertility.

Ancient mythology serves as the main source of my inspiration for creating Yardan and his backstory. There are many references on this matter in antique myths (ancient Greek myths), philosophy (Plato), and Hindu Vedic literature (where most gods are gender-fluid), and of course history of ancient cultures such as of Mesopotamia and Anatolia.

Here are three elements of my Arcane Idol:

1. Talisman – Yardan’s crown shaped like sun-rays. His teacher saw Attis reborn in him and therefore crowned him as his chosen disciple and the next Archigallus of the galli community. The crown has special secret power that no one knew, as the legends tell anyone who owned this crown could rule the Rome. In fact, this crown was the symbol of freedom.

2. Equipment – his ceremonial weapon is an axe, also an attribute of Attis, in ancient times, it was not only a weapon of Zeus (lightning), but it symbolized the severing of ties to the material world: sex, gender, body, views and values, thus, the divine androgyne becomes a creature beyond material norms, a being from spiritual dimension.

3. Logo – the symbol of my Arcane Idol is a pomegranate, an ancient “apple” from the legend about Attis, according to which his mother nymph Nana has put the fruit to her belly and became pregnant with Attis.

___

And my reply to three questions:

1. Do you have a backstory when you create an original character?
Always. When I create an original character concept, I already have in mind its story, so either I write it first or after the concepts, but the backstory is born first, in my head.

2. How do you think you would handle a meteoric rise to fame?
Surely. I’m calm about it. Popularity is never my goal, yet it is a chance to show artist’s world to more people, so I welcome the fame as a very good opportunity.

3. What are your favorite tools to use in the creative process?
Definitely the information I read: books, articles, literature. If some facts seem very interesting but they lack depiction and illustration, I want to ‘bring out’ what has been formed in my imagination. I always choose something rare and what is “ignored” by the majority. Secondly, other tools that help me to be motivated is beautiful photography or old paintings.

The presence of breasts, feminine face, extremely feminine figure, feminine clothes and absence of a penis and testicles seems rather strange then ^^'

He is androgynous and very feminine, but he still male  In this he is unique.
These are gender stereotypes that should be broken. Not everyone who looks like girls is actually a girl (for example intersex and non-binary people, eunuchs, androgynous and hermaphrodites), and vice versa, not everyone who looks like men are men by their genetic sex.
Art must expand gender boundaries.

Thank you for saying this, very beautifully put. There are also transgender people who do not "pass" for various reasons and whose gender might therefore be hard to determine.

That's right. You know the the narrow standards complicate life. I myself have male friends who are feminine but still consider themselves males, they just don't want feminine roles and "pretending", they love beauty and prettiness without thinking that no beard, long hair, long eyelashes and red lips - is belonging to female. They just see it as beauty. And I fully accept that, I like them, I see them as beautiful boys, but everything gets sad and complicated when people judge "are you a girl or boy? If you're gay then why you look like girl?" or even insult "you're sissy", "sexless", "weird", they force own standards on us and I'm starting to feel anxious as if for just "looking differently" you might get killed, why? Even animals don't act like this.
I recall story Sarrasine by Honore de Balzac, Zambinella was a castrato who looked fully feminine and Sarrasine falling in love with him thought that was a woman, but when he revealed that it was a castrato - a eunuch, he was up to kill him. I don't blame Zambinella for looking so feminine but Sarrasine is the pure embodiment of society's stereotypes and cliches that lead only to confusion and destruction.

It's a two gendered system designed by nature.

Even if you are somehow born with both sets of genitals, one tends to be more dominant and most of people choose one or the other.

Keep it simple, why make overly complicated, what doesn't needs to be?

If it Looks like a duck, Swims like a duck, Sounds like a duck, Acts like duck and Dresses like a duck, it's pretty much a duck...

If you wanna be a penguin instead, then you should make every effort into becoming one and not still do everything like a duck.

Common sense really, nothing against people transitioning, but don't say you're a penguin but still do everything like a duck.

Heck, it's even okay to be an odd duck or penguin, no shame in that.

But don't be that full duck or penguin, saying they're the opposite. XD

But. Why do you have to choose? You can do anything you like, as long as you're not harming anyone else.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DannyAndYoko In reply to GossamerAdopts [2020-03-13 00:15:42 +0000 UTC]

If you don't choose, you've already decided that you don't care and just let nature and/or society choose for you.

e.g. You were born with all the characteristics as a duck, so you just shrug and go by as a duck.

Or others see you clearly as a penguin, so to make it easier for them, they just go with penguin for you.

If you get upset about others choosing for you, then you clearly DO care and you then should've chosen for yourself.

Your comparison of sex with different species shows how much you do not understand the difference between the sex within the same species and the completely different genetic difference between the species. Still say that man and woman are different as well as potato and duck.

At least, Yardan is my character and I decide what sex/gender he is and how he looks. If you have a different opinion, I don’t want to know, because you have no respect. You continue to stubbornly insist on your point of view, although you have no basis in this case.

First of all I would say the world is not only two sexes or two genders, other sexes and also genders exist. Just as there is no pure "white" or "black" or "asian" races, there are the "mixed" people.

People should not forget about intersex people, for example persons who are internally male but look fully feminine, that's androgen insensitivity syndrome. Such people can't be "females" in social meaning and fully male either. We cannot force them the made up standards, it will just cause problems as now the society forcing the bipolar standards and even slightly feminine men are judged for being "abnormal" and same for boy-like girls. In some older times for women to wear pants was something outrageous, not to say about short hair and no makeup, because the stereotypes dictated "women should be feminine, men should be masculine".

Why understanding genders is so difficult? The line "Keep it simple, why make overly complicated" is naive... well, in old times mixed races in many cultures was almost forbidden (especially jewish or black), so people always wanted their kids to marry persons of own race and even country and own folk, because why make it complicated? People gonna ask you "what is your homeland?" and you'll have to name two, three four countries? Or you look Asian but you say you're from Europe? Even now people don't get it and ask me "who are you then, asian or russian"? For some people I look fully asian, for some I look fully 'european', for some I look mixed or even fully different nationality, that's just because not all people marry people of different race, can you blame love? No. We're born with it.

Same here, someone seems too feminine for you, but for someone it's not that feminine and they can accept it and see the world differently just like those people who differently see races and nationalities.

You give examples with duck which is, honestly, a bit disrespectful, because human society is way more complex than of ducks, and human race has been always diverse. The comparison between penguin and duck - they are different kind of birds, while we are talking about sexes within one kind, here we talk about humans. If we take domestic ducks you can't tell where is female or male, same for many other animals where there's no big difference.

I don't get upset about others choosing for me, I get used since I'm always judged enough by people even for race, nationality, religion and etc. But why others have rights to choose? There is simple human interaction, we can just ask, right? People ask name, people ask age or country, I mean they don't decide it for others or it will be just stupidity. Same for gender and sex, just cause LGBTQAI rights are starting to spread not very long time ago, people should understand and stop deciding for others.

PS. And a kind request, no trolling others here, please. If you have started the conversation with others or the artists, reply with respect, if you can't, leave the page. Have a good day.

It's really great what you're trying to do with breaking these boundaries, it's unfortunate that people who see this with out reading the description will just see a cis female. Maybe the addition of a few more masculine qualities to compliment the feminine would make people stop and consider your message more

Develv In reply to Series63 [2020-03-18 07:07:28 +0000 UTC]

I understand your point, however the measurements of "what is masculine" has different scales depending on people. Sometimes I draw obviously masculine men but some other would mistake him for a woman while if I draw very feminine boy for some others he would still seem "not feminine enough". So it's just a matter of view, and we artists are not creating art to satisfy everyone's tastes, but we just want to reflect the reality.

Some men look fully feminine but still are referred to as men like Japanese visual-kei musicians:
espguitars.co.jp/gallery/hizak…
a-to-jconnections.com/uploads/…
Also in the middle East hijras are referred to as gender-fluid  so some call them "she", some "he"
dunya.com.pk/news/2018/April/0…
i.ytimg.com/vi/tcquOZiP748/max…
Like Mehak Malik (above) who is hijra (third-gender person) despite the feminine looks, by authorities was called "Janaab" which means "sir", "mister". So there's no big deal to refer to hijras as "he", the only thing that matters is respect. In the human society we cannot force sex and gender on people just depending on their looks. Some people just want to have looks but not gender and we must respect that instead of imposing the bipolar standards of male and female sex and gender.

I'm not saying what you should do or say at all.

If you you're very clearly A in everything ranging from what you do, how you act, how you look and how you dress but you just say you're B...

You're just being an attention seeker, in my OPINION.
