I once did this with a few friends. One of the greatest nights in my life.
Just do it in summer. In August maybe - I saw 25 shooting stars that night. That was amazing. Maybe listen to the radio when it says when there'll be many of them. ^^

yes, it differs from year to year within about +/-3 days, i estimate.
about southern hemisphere i think it depends on the position of the Earth to the asteroid belt or whatever it was/they call it. so because we share the planet i think they ought to get the "meteor shower" too.

the weather is different in different places on different time... so i guess whether you see it or not depends on the weather everywhere... i'm sure it's visible there too at least in some places or in many years.. everything is possible

i tend to believe you didn't do any kind of statistics counting in every 10x10km area
i checked the atlas and i have to say it rains relatively little there(S hemisphere) in august (of course rainforests are exceptional)
