It might be that as long as you know you can, you don't.

Agreeing with the security blanket thing. That and you might just think you need to light a match or something at camp? I bring a crap load of unnecessary stuff out with ridiculous scenarios in my head XD

old habits die hard, ST. I feel for you, though I didn't burn myself. I keep my razor next to my bed, but I've been using it on my candles when I get upset. Maybe find an outlet with it? Just don't burn your house down @__@

It's almost certainly a comfort thing. Even without the intention of using it, having it with you makes you feel less stressed.

My grandad gave up smoking when he was younger, but for forty years until the day he died, even though he never smoked again, he carried twenty cigarettes in his pocket- and he could never say exactly why he did it.

I still carried around a lighter and piece of wire even after I stopped SI. It's like when a smoker finally quits, but they have an unopened pack of cigarettes in their pocket. They COULD light up and take a drag, but they don't want to. Because they finally can say "I don't need to."

I guess....

Hmm.

Maybe you just unintentionally waiting for the day where you find a few other people, each with a bag of marshmallows, some chocolate bars, graham crackers, and a pile of firewood and you're like "Well, I have a lighter, and you guys have all of this, so it's natural that we need to make s'mores right NOW. Let's party" ?

At least, that's a slightly lighter and very tasty explanation on it....

It may be for security ... I mean the lighter may make you feel as if it there to fall back on if you feel lost or it simply may be because it reminds you of how far you have come.

i stopped carrying a blade a long time ago. But i still carry a pin. Not sharp enough to do any damage, just enough to leave a scratch, a slightly painful red mark. Just in case, y'know?

it's because you aren't a quitter.
it isn't a bad thing, you just need to find something more positive to be addicted to.

It's a security blanket. As long as you don't use it, all is good.

going kinda on the security blanket thing
it's a reminder
a reminder of what you felt before
so that you see that life really is great
it's the same as the scars
they are there as a reminder of the pain
so that you can see the light

Maybe that's your security blanket. You can know that you're not going to burn yourself, you're just calmed by the fact that you know you can if you need to, even though you don't need to. If that makes any sense, I hope it helps.

i agree. it's how you've made yourself comfortable, and somewhere in your mind you're not ready to let it go, even though you don't need it any more. i hope that one day you won't carry it around best of luck

Now here is one I can really relate too. Well except for the boyfriend part, but many years ago. I used to burn myself instead of cutting myself. Because I felt so worthless.
