Yikes, what a story! That's the sin of pride for you. I would have hand-checked that basket of fruit if it were one of one kids.

I did a journal post that alluded to not trying to control the future lest you cut your hand trying...something like that....the sultan might just as well have caused his daughter's death as much as anyone by trying to control fate.

Exactly...and it is more aligned than not with "be careful what you wish for." I was thinking about the need to lose a few pounds...and then my neighbor came out...and she has lost much weight because she has been incapacitated by a dire disease...and suddenly things got really, really clear.

Wow....even I started to resent her (get jealous)for losing weight before I even read the rest of the sentence.
Humble pie for me tonight.
I also had a duel thought at the same time....concerning weight issues....Yesterday I quit smoking...after nearly 6 years. And the last thing I wanna do is gain weight from quitting....but I won't lie....
IT IS HELL!
Have you ever smoked?

Oh, yeah, for many years, in spite of adult-onset asthma! Now I have my little one (of the 3) smoking. One only quits when one is ready. Insert grinding of teeth here.
I quit with my first pregnancy at 30, started again, quit again with my second pregnancy at 35, started again, and then had a scary I-can't-breathe thing and so stopped again before my third pregnancy (born at 38). Never picked up a cigarette again.
Rest assured that the craving DOES go away. I have NO inclination to pick up a cigarette, and have not since the no-breathing incident. The weight thing...I don't know how old you are...but metabolic issues come into play. I think that a few extra ice-cream pounds are better than lungs full of black grit.
I know a woman who, with throat cancer, smokes cigarettes through her neck, where there is a big hole from her trachaeotomy. Some people get stuck, you know.
Try really hard not to be a stuck person, Mike.

Oh, not selfish at all, about the birthday. I get it completely. I get more involved in my kids' birthdays than my own, just remembering the miracles of their entries into the world. I mean, it's not about us, the birthdays. It's bigger than that, I think. But I, at 57, am just beginning my exploration. Who knows? How funny that we tend to label things in a derogatory manner. I am trying SO hard to break that mind set...and sometimes I even succeed! I have a full house for Easter. Guess what they ALL will be looking at? (The Easter card, in the frame, is on a lazy susan!)

So they can all spin the lazy susan (and they will, I assure you), and you will probably feel the good vibes from way up here!
Peace.
