Description
Skull Island's Kaiju wildlife is easily the most well-documented of all the Kaiju ecosystems, with a myriad of terrifying creatures lurking within it that make it easily the most dangerous out of all the Kaiju ecosystems too. A great deal of these Kaiju are florafauna, being "biolithically" bonded to plants, fungi and other, similar organisms. A handful of species have even fused with other animals, and there are also some carnivorous plants that have evolved to become more like animals. It has taken years to discover every organism on the island we currently know of, and there are still more being discovered by the month, so our current files represent only a fraction of what Skull Island has to offer...
Name: Skull Island Deer
Scientific name: Vryodicervus tachys (swift mossy deer)
Height: 0.8 meters
Length: 2 meters
Diet: Herbivore
Affiliation: Minor Kaiju
Skull Island deer are amongst the island's most common herbivores, being found in the isle's jungles, plains and even the bamboo forests as permanent residents. Identified as being a derived member of the muntiacini tribe (which also includes muntjacs and their ilk), this small deer travels in small herds of up to twelve individuals, typically led by one dominant male and with one or two lesser males following behind to prevent incest. These deer are amongst the few reasonably friendly creatures on Skull Island: they are fairly skittish and usually flee at the first sign of trouble, though if the dominant male is low on females he will often attempt to fight off the predator (if it's not too big that is). The fleeing is aided by the moss that has bonded with the Skull Island deer's pelt, as its photosynthesis provides the deer with extra energy to run for as long and as fast as possible when fleeing assailants. This is very much a necessary ability, as the deer's only defence, its antlers (and even then they are lot smaller on the females) are typically ill equipped to fend off predators, being too clumsy to properly aim and oftentimes being rather blunt due to them mainly being used for rutting (which the male Skull Island deer use to decide the dominant individual and to force others off of their territory), and there are certainly a lot of predators who want to chow down on these florafauna. Their small size and currently massive population (they are easily Skull Island's most common herbivores) make them an easy food source, and everything from the Kellogg's shrew to the Skullcrawler feeds on these speedy herbivores. Due to their lack of defence, these cervines often form symbiotic relationships with other larger or more well-armoured plant-eaters for better protection, and many competing herds of these muntiacines can be seen trailing larger beasts across Skull Island's ecosystems. Skull Island deer mainly feed on low-growing grasses and shrubs.
Name: Sker Buffalo
Scientific name: Herbabubalis weaveri (Weaver's grass oxen, after Mason Weaver, the original Skull Island expedition's photographer)
Height: 13.7 meters
Length: 19 meters
Diet: Herbivore
Affiliation: Minor Kaiju
Sker buffalo are another more gentle species on Skull Island, dwelling in the isle's swamps and the marshier areas formed when the swamp meets the plains. Though they usually live in areas where there is more land, they are perfectly at home underwater, possessing webbed hooves to better locomote through the murky depths and using the plants that cover their bodies to produce oxygen for a good air supply underwater, allowing them to survive within the depths of Skull Island’s lakes and swamps for days on end without coming up to the surface. These huge bovines are amongst the most common herbivores of Skull Island's more watery regions, and so are preyed on by a wide variety of predators. The plants that cover the sker buffalo's body are its main help against this, as they can be used to allow the herbivore camouflage amongst the other foliage and so hide from predators. To help in this camouflage, sker buffalo source their plants from their surroundings, leading to "regional variants" of these florafaunal herbivores (IE swamp-dwelling sker buffalo are often coated in pondweed and swamp grass, marshland sker buffalo are coated in shorter grasses and the odd carnivorous plant ETC ETC) for different areas of the island. The individual depicted, believed to be at least the same variant as the first sker buffalo specimen encountered by the first Skull Island expedition, hails from a marshland lake. Oftentimes, sker buffalo become ecosystems in their own right and host a variety of symbiotic animals alongside their plants, and when one dies these symbiotes either parasitise its killer until they find a suitable new home or seek out a living sker buffalo to live on. When cornered, sker buffalo can utilise their strong, bony horns against predators, but these are primarily used for sexual display, as larger horns typically indicate a healthier individual. Sker buffalo possess a variety of different teeth, and so feed on a wide variety of plants, from short marsh grasses to giant pondweed.
Name: Mother Longlegs
Scientific name: Bampouarania longa (tall bamboo spider)
Body length: 6 meters
Leg length: 10-30 meters
Diet: Carnivore
Affiliation: Minor Kaiju
Mother longlegs are florafaunal arachnids of no clear classification that are found exclusively in Skull Island’s bamboo forests, where they are the apex predator. Extremely stealthy thanks to their bamboo legs (equipped with sharp claws which allow mother longlegs to more easily stride through their domains), chlorophyll-enfused chitin and bracken-coated abdomen, the length of their legs varies greatly (though obviously the longer the limbs the better equipped the mother longlegs are to survive). At first, they were believed to be entirely female, but it now seems that all mother longlegs are effectively both sexes, possessing both male and female sex organs to produce offspring with. These offspring, gestating within florafaunal eggs fused with spinning jennies that can scatter far and wide through the bamboo forests, often end up in areas far away from their parents to avoid competition. Mother longlegs move very little through-out their entire lives to maximise their stealth, usually only ever doing so to escape danger or capture prey. Though mother longlegs must eat actual animals for important substances such as proteins, they actually spend a lot of their time absorbing energy from the photosynthesis of their plants and their own chlorophyll, which forms the main part of their diets. When unsuspecting prey (usually Skull Island deer and other small herbivores, as the longlegs' legs are usually too fragile to survive combat against larger beasts) wander nearby, the mother longlegs either impale them on their sharp claws or ensnare them in the fleshy tentacles (believed to be derived from the digestive system due to many surviving victims of the mother longlegs who were tied up in these tendrils receiving burns indicative of acids), ultimately lifting them up to their mandibles to rip into the flesh of their quarry and squirting them with digestive juices to devour them. For protection, the mother longlegs have the bristling, quill-like plants growing out of their abdomens, but since they are the largest permanent predators of the bamboo forests they typically don’t need to move. Unfortunately for them, their own lack of a need to fight back often leads to the mother longlegs underestimating their foes, and they are easily killed by large creatures who know what they’re facing. The awkward, stiff nature of their limbs also makes it difficult for the mother longlegs to move far, and so in combat they are often outclassed. Still, when using their ambush tactics they are practically unbeatable. However, a minority of mother longlegs have poorly fused with their bamboo, leading to them being unable to feel anything on their plant limbs. As a result, herbivores can easily feed on them, and these mother longlegs’ limbs are often perforated with hundreds of holes which expose them to potential prey and make their already fragile limbs even easier to break. Still, mother longlegs are deadly predators when at the top of their game.
Name: Mire Squid
MONARCH Codename: TARBOMB
Scientific name: Chimaeraplokami rugsosus (rugose chimera tentacle)
Height: 12 meters
Body length: 27 meters
Tentacle length: 33 meters (can extend up to 60 meters)
Diet: Carnivore
Affiliation: Major Kaiju (Wildlife)
Mire squids are colossal cephalopods that lurk in Skull Island's swamps and the habitats stemming out from them. It is difficult to properly classify them, as they possess features from both octopi and squids. Mire squids are amongst the most common predators of Skull Island's waterways, preying on smaller aquatic and semi-aquatic Minor Kaiju such as sker buffalo. Unlike their closest relatives, mire squids possess little to no camouflaging abilities, and are far less intelligent. However, they do wield a special strategy for seizing prey: the mire squid will dive into a deep corner of their watery abode and extend their tentacles, rapidly rotating their bodies to generate a powerful whirlpool. Due to the many species dwelling in the swamp, a hapless creature will inevitably be drawn into this vortex. Depending on the size of this prey, the cephalopod will either swallow it whole or rapidly emerge from the depths, jetting itself up to ram its already disorientated quarry and then wrap them up in its tendrils to eat them alive with its sharp beak. Mire squids are preyed upon by many of the swamps' predators despite their large size (as some of Skull Island's larger monsters dwell in these steamy waterways). For the smaller of these assailants, such as the Saurokraken, the mire squid can rely on its thick hide and thick, fleshy knobs which give it its corrugated body as a durable defence as well as its powerful tentacles, but when attacked by even larger predators such as the sirenjaws the mire squid will release hot ink, which both obscure it from its hunter whilst boiling them alive unless if they choose to leave. Mire squids are powerful predators due to their effective methods and mighty defences, and according to the Iwi they were even a match for King Kong during the Primal Rage. They are viewed by the tribe as spirits of war and servants of Oodako due to their similarities to the massive octopus (the mire squids and Oodako seem to be the only cephalopod species on Skull Island apart from a handful of species found in normal waters in the deeper regions of the seas surrounding the isle), but they have no real connection to each other besides being close relations in terms of taxonomy.
Name: Leafwing
Scientific name: Foliogladius sminos (swarming leaf sword)
Length: 1.4 meters
Wingspan: 0.9 meters
Diet: Carnivore
Affiliation: Minor Kaiju
Leafwings are an example of Skull Island's unusual anurognathids, the other examples being Harpiya and the psychovultures. They are rather derived from their ancestors, possessing tails and body structures similar to rhamphorhynchoids, but genetic testing indicates that they and the psychovultures share a common ancestor. Leafwings are highly successful, being found in large swarms all over Skull Island. Their names originate from trees, where they usually choose to sleep in, as they will cling to the branches and sticks of a dead tree during the night to give the illusion that they are actually part of a tree and then move on to other areas to find food. These pterosaurs mostly feed on insects and small vertebrates, but in times when food is scarce (such as during the Primal Rage) they will join up in their large swarms to hunt larger prey. Leafwings are fairly weak on their own, but together they can lift up animals up to the mass of a human and use their grooved head blades (which are mainly used by males for "duels" over mates and to jab at predators (often embedding small, irritating barbs, amongst the last remnants of the hair derived from the leafwings' ancestors, in their assailants, causing them to swiftly back off) to fend them off) to slice prey apart into smaller chunks that can be more easily eaten by individual leafwings. Though this behaviour has not been observed on Skull Island since the Primal Rage (areas off of Skull Island are a horribly different story), members of the MONARCH expedition have testified to it being true, as they were attacked by leafwings whilst battling the Skullcrawler that killed Jack Chapman and Conrad's group witnessed these pterosaurs pick up and slice apart Landsat operative Victor Nieves (and were sadly unable to save him due to failing to get a clear shot). Leafwings are also florafauna, having fused with lichen to more easily aid in their tree camouflage. To more easily find potential prey, they can sense their quarry using thermal radiation, much like snakes. Leafwings are the most common Kaiju to break out of Skull Island, being strong enough to weather the storm system (most of the time) but too small for Oodako and Ebirah to pick up on. As a result, many invasive leafwing populations have been established over the years, and though most of them have been killed or captured we, the GDF and G-Force are always on the lookout for new invasive colonies.

It almost feels good going back to wildlife entries for AoK. I'll be starting off with the Kong: Skull Island and The Birth of Kong monsters first before showing off my interpretations of other Skull Islanders, monsters of other islands and some small monsters that have never lived on any island. I'm very pleased with all these guys, especially the sker buffalo and the leafwing, the former because I think my lineless use of green for the horn plants came out really well and the latter because I think I actually managed to do a good new pose. Also, after taking a good long look at those unnamed deer I think they may be referencing the kelbi from Monster Hunter. They actually look rather similar, and Vogt-Roberts apparently snuck in a lot of references to anime and videogames into Skull Island's wildlife. I guess we may never know...
