Description This is what i would like to call a " quickie"

quickie because it only took me 1 day to make, probably due to the fact that it was part of a prototype for use in my previous piece called "effulgence."

I went for a simple composition and complex objects. my favorite part of the whole thing is the lower planet. I really like how the 20+ layers for the sucker turned out to make what, in my opinion, is a nice planet. The bigger one is nice but not as detailed, which was done on purpose so that the viewer focuses its attention on the smaller one. The big sun coming from behind the big planet is there for the same reason, which is complemented by the size of the image. You will probably get your eyes away from the sun and focus on the smaller details.
Starfield came out better than my previous ones, a LOT better in my opinion.
I noticed that the average space scene barely uncludes blues anymore, as opposed to a few months ago, where anything that wasnt blue would be considered off-the-hook. So i decided to bring back some of the peacefulness that blue brings.

That beind said, the city lights show signs of civilization, maybe human, which portrait the chance of intelligent life on another worlds.

This piece was done entirely in photoshop, no 3d studio max at all.

really good piece, but maybe the edges of the planets shouldn't be glowing in the dark side, although you already know this, and just put it with a artistic purpose

So I have decided to tackle you create a planet tutorial, but it doesn't include that really amazing city lights this one features. Is there any way you could help me with that? Thanks!

For city light, you can simply use NASA maps of city lights and treat them as a texture just like this.

There's a way of painting them, too, however. For that, you gotta make a brush that's basically made out of a very small lens flare. Then you change the brush with scattering, size differences, etc, etc. Fairly simple once you get the basic idea.

I haven't ever made a brush before, but I will try out the NASA maps. Thanks!

Look up some tutorials on custom brushes. They're pretty easy to make

for a quicky its awaysome.
I love the blue color of it and the sunflare in the atmosphaer.
Do you have any tip on doing smale rings around the planets? Just not the big Saturn one, thin and dusty ones.

You can basically use the same technique, just less elaborate. Like add various outer glows to a circle, merge the layer, then transform it so that it fits the perspective.

OK, if i get it to do some space pictures I will try it.

At the moment there is really only one planet thats needed to get a nice picture off. It's my world of Gor'Li ...but it still need some geographical maps to be made first.
do you know any tutorial here in deviantArt or in the Web about making maps with "photorealistic" features (sea, river, mountains, jungle...) that can be used as surface patterns for planets. Also it seems I need to look up a good tutorial for the cloud layer of a planet.

Can't say i know of any tutorials for that. Im generally a bad source for tutorial info, since most of the time I just play around until I get it right as opposed to just look for tutorials. Unless im seriously stuck and have really nowhere to begin, I wont dig for tutorials.

In the meantime I found a few useful ones. If that is the kind of stuff I looking for will be show up if I found time to try painting on my planet's map.

awesome shadow work, diny!

but the light source is behind the larger planet, i feel the light atmos around the smaller planet is a tad bit too large. if the light was slightly further back then it would be more likely.

Amazing Work, I have been fighting myself as to which one of dinyctis's work I was going to fav, I think I have settled on this one, I love the light rays coming from behind the planet and the colors I perfect. Another thihg is the amount of detail like the city light on the moon or small planet. Great work! +fav

There’s a very innocent nature to this picture, I think. This impression is primarily given by the blue lighting you’ve chosen, as that there are no spaceships, no asteroids or anything else to make you feel ambivalent about what this is image is trying to show us, which in case, I think is how simple yet beautiful display of how great can be nature. Interesting how I comment like this is a photo and not artificial!

I also think it’s interesting how chose the lights of civilisation to be placed on the smaller world or moon. (Here goes my astronomy enthusiasm!) If the moon was say, the size of our moon, then wouldn’t the gravity been too low for it to hold an atmosphere, and if it was the size of earth, would the body it orbits, being so large, emit so much gravity that the moons surface would be in a constant state of movement, such as Io’s surface orbiting Jupiter, though to a lesser extent? I don’t pretend to know that much about the subject, but just what I’ve read and seen on TV.

Actually, saying all that, I don’t think it matters too much does it!?

Anyway, to wrap up, this really is a spectacular piece of art, and being space art makes it all that more appealing to me to look at.

Excellent work.

you know your astronomy physics!

however, this could also be 2 independent planets closing to each other's orbits, like mars and the Earth do every 2 years

Probably one of the best space pictures I've seen yet. It is so simple, yet detailed. The textures are sharp enough. Makes me want to try making one of my own... I'm sure this would look great on my wall.
After couple minutes of thinking, I decided to make this my favourite.
good job.
