Everyone I know who gets a katana set on display stands does this same thing you've done: The sword is upside down.
When a katana is displayed with the cutting edge facing down it means the samurai who owns it is dead.
Same when it's worn, the cutting edge is facing up, and it's drawn with a tilted back hand pushing out of the scabbard rather than pulling across your body.
If you look at pics of Iaido, which is the art of drawing and sheathing quickly, you'll see the scabbard is curving down towards the ground not up towards the sky. Pics or vids of that would be a good reference.

European swords are double-sided (no up/down) and use a different grip. When you try to draw an edge-up katana using a european grip it doesn't work so well, so trying ourselves we never figure out that having it that way is actually the right way until we're taught. It's not something that makes apparent sense or that you figure out from trial and error.

Not all European swords are double-edged. In fact, there are a large number that are single-edged.

But you're right about the way to wear a katana. I don't know if you know, but it is worth noting that not all Japanese swords are worn that way.

The sheathe draw is the fastest technique for sword users. So, have the draw sped up a bit more.
I'm also slightly confused on where the animation starts and stops with how fast they blur together. That could just be because it's a rough sketch though.
Also, have the samurai end the blade like he's cutting someone instead of ending in front of him, and have the blade turned horizontal instead of vertical. Finally, have the front leg seem like it's extending more. All of this will give it a greater feel of motion and impact of being cut.
Other than that, so far so good, keep it up!

When sheathed, the blade of the katana faces the sky, so that when you draw and extend toward the opponent,Β the blade faces the ground.

It's overall a really good animation, I think you could maybe speed up the drawing of the sword, and maybe make the default stance slightly longer, and the turn slightly more fluent. Or even make him start drawing his sword at the default stance, turn and make the slash, that would probably look even cooler too.

When he points it at the enemy, wouldnt the curve of the blade be going to the sky?

Amoux-Ilta In reply to FH47 [2016-11-18 21:12:18 +0000 UTC]

In the way that he pulled it out, no. If you look at the shealth, the blade is pointing up then.

This came along nicely! a job well done indeed^^ what program is this?Β

Well I'm sure you know what Flash animation is at some point.Β en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_an… I wouldn't say its the best to start off but its good to get your feet wet know what i mean?

Β

if you want a BETTER idea on how Flash works then i highly recommend watching a video like this.Β

Β

youtu.be/_YjOLGAq4XA it goes Way more in-depth on how Flash works the the guy explains it in a good way to understand. but thats up to you of course if you wanna use the program or not.

Β

other animation programs such as Pencil 2DΒ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencil2D give more fluid animation i hear, FlipnoteΒ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flipnote… not sure if Nintendo still has it who knows XD

Β

now if you wanna know about a certain style of animation called "Sakuga" id be glad to talk to you about it. I'm sure you'd be interested in that too~

Great animation work, love it!
But I can see an issue with the sword. It starts with the blade point downwards but when he pulls it out, the blade flips up.
Other than that, everything looks pretty good!

Terkontar In reply to NinjaCharlieT [2016-11-18 15:42:22 +0000 UTC]

...umm, it's actually not a mistake. Try to do that - you draw a sword from the sheath, the blade is pointing downwards. Then you extend your arm as far as you can - the blade is now facing the opponent - and use the wrist to finish the cut. Ta-daa, the blade's pointing upwards.

The only mistake in here is that the blade is pointing downwards while sheathed - that's not how you carry a katana/uchigatana.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NinjaCharlieT In reply to Terkontar [2016-11-19 03:41:51 +0000 UTC]

Nope, the most it can turn is 90-120 degrees towards the side, not flipped upside down.
And by the way it was animated, there is no twist in the wrist movement, therefore the sword should not be flipped.

Sigh. Here, check out this. ->Β youtu.be/Wfq7QRzZMLs?t=1m18s

Blade upwards when sheathed, blade downwards when cut is finished. That's literally the same principle, only difference being that the cut is performed from a different angle.

NinjaCharlieT In reply to Terkontar [2016-11-19 09:22:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I don't think we are talking about the same thing then.
Of course that technique is right, but in the animation, it looks like the sword is twisting along the blade if u get what I mean. Like a drill (that's what it looks like to me).
